P'ATEN OFFICE.
- NATHAN FRIEDMAN, OF YONKERS, NEW YORK.
SMOKING PIPE.
Application filed October 26, 1920. Serial No. 419,638.
To all whom- 1'26 may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN FRIEDMAN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Yonkers, in the count-y of \Vestchester and State of New York, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Smoking lipes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide certain improvements in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts of a smoking pipe whereby the smoke will be cooled on its way from the bowl to the mouth piece and the nicotine will be absorbed by members which may be readily removed and replaced, the several parts being readily disassembled for the purpose of cleanszng the non-renewable parts.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Fig. 1 represents the pipe in longitudinal vertical section.
Fig. 2 represents a frontview of the pipe.
Fig. 3 represents a transverse vertical section through the pipe bowl taken in the plane of the line IIIIII of Fig. l.
The pipe bowl'is denoted by 1, the large hollow stem by 2 and the mouth piece by 3. The mouth piece 3 is provided with a front reduced portion 4, which is removably inserted into the rear end of the hollow stem 2 for closing the stem. The hollow stem extends through the pipe bowl and has a large opening 5 through its side wall into the interior of the bowl at the bottom thereof. 7
A plug 6 removably closes the front end of the hollow stem 2, which plug is provided with a reduced rear extension 7 over which is inserted the front end of a removable tube 8. which tube is spaced from the inner wall of the hollow stem 2 and from the front extension 4: of the mouth piece 3.
This tube 8 is preferably made of rolled paper and it is secured onto the rear extension 7 of the plug 6 by means of a metal ferrule 9, which ferrule extends to the front and rear of the opening 5 in the side wall of the hollow stem 2 for protecting the tube 8 from being burned.
A smaller tube 10 is removably inserted into the passage 11 through the mouth piece 3, which tube is spaced from the inner wall of the tube 8 and also from the extension 7 of the plug 6. This tube also is preferably made of rolled paper which is held in position bythe insertion of the rear end of the tube into the said passage 11.
To disassemble the parts, the plug 6, together with its tube 8 may be removed by a forward movement and the mouth piece together with its tube 10 may be removed by a rearward movement, thus bringing the tubes into position where they may be removed and replaced when so desired and also entirely opening up the hollow stem 2 so that its inner walls may be readily cleansed when so desired.
Because of the large opening 5 between the interior of the bowl and the interior of the stem the free passage of the smoke is permitted from the bowl into the stem with no danger of the stem becoming clogged and choked.
It is evident that various changes maybe resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts and in the material used, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Hence I do not wish to limit myself to the particular 1e)mbodiment and materials herein set forth,
What I claim is:
1. A smoking pipe comprising a pipebowl, a hollow stem of large diameter extending therethrough and having a large opening through its side wall into the interior of the bowl, a removable plug closing t-he'front end of the stem, a removable mouth piece closing the back end of the stem, a. removable tube 'of absorbent material carried by the plug and spaced from the inner wall of the stem and the front end of the mouth piece, and a removable tube of ob sorbent material carried by the mouth piece and spaced from the inner Wall of the plug tube and the back end of the plug.
2. A smoking pipe comprising a pipe bowl, a hollow stem of large diameter extending therethrough and having a large opening through its side wall into the in-' terior of the bowl, a removable plug closing the front end of the stem, a removable mouth piece closing the back end of the stem, a removable paper tube carried by the plug and spaced from the inner wall of the stem and the front end of the mouth piece, a removable paper tube carried by the mouth piece and spaced from the inner walls of the plug tube and the back end of the plug, and a metal ferrule for securing the first named tube onto the plug, said ferrule extending to the front and rear of said opening in the stem, for protecting the tube from being burned.
In testin'ionj' that I claim the foregoing 10 as my invention, I have signed my name this 25th day of October 1920.
NATHAN FRIEDMAN.
