Description
Jan. 3, 1933. N. FRIEDMAN 1,893,137
SMOKING PIPE Filed April 1, 1930 INVENTOR M Mflu/ ATTORNEYS Patented Jano 3, 1933 "PATENT OFFICE NATHAN FRIEDMAN, OF YONKEBS, NEW YORK suoxme rm Application flied April 1, 1930. Serial No. 440,850.
My invention is directed to improvements in that class of smoking pipes in which a tortuous smoke channel is provided in the stem between the bowl and mouthpiece so that the smoke may be cooled and moisture removed therefrom in its passage from the bowl to the mouthpiece.
My invention comprises a nine havin a bowl, a mouthpiece, and a stem removably engaging the bowl and mouthpiece, and inner and outer replaceable tubes located within the stem, the inner tube being removably supported by the mouthpiece and the outer tu e being removably supported by the inner tube, W said tubes being preferably made of absorbent material, such, for instance, as paper.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanyin drawing, in which i Fig. 1 represents my improved smoking pipe in longitudinal vertical section;
ig. 2 represents a horizontal section taken in the plane of the line IIII of Fig.1,looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 3 represents a transverse section taken in the plane of the line IIIIII of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of thearrows, and
Fig. 4 represents a transversesection taken in the plane of the line IVI'V of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
The pipe bowl is denoted by 1 and it is provided with a short lateral shank 2. A ferrule 3"is secured to the shank 2 and projects a short distance rearwardly therefrom. The shank is provided with the usual bore 4.
The pipe stem 5 has its front end removably inserted into the ferrule 3.. The mouthpiece 6 is provided with a reduced front end- 7 which is removably inserted into the rear end of t pipe stem5. The bore 8 in the mouthpiece 6 1s enlar ed at its front end for I removably receiving the rear end of the inner tube 9 so that the inner tube is entirely su ported by the mouthpiece. This inner tu 9 is open at both ends. An outer tube 10 is supported by the inner tube 9. A closure is provided for the front end of the outer tu which closure is herein shown "as a removable cap 11. p
The inner and outer tubes 9 and 10 are preferably made of absorbent material and the cap 11 is preferably made of metal so that it maybe used with successive outer tubes.
When it is desired to replace the inner and outer tubes the mouthpiece may be withdrawn from the stem, thereby withdrawing the inner and outer tubes therefrom. The outer tube may then be slid off from the inner tube and the inner tube may be withdrawn fromthe mouthpiece. A new inner tube may then be inserted into the mouthpiece and a new outer tube may be inserted over the inner tube with the same closure 11 or another closure, as may be desired. The I mouthpiece may then be re-engaged with the stem for properly assembling the parts.
To ensure the free passage of the smoke from the pipe bowl to the mouthpiece, the shank 2 of the bowl may be provided with a cut-away portion 12 and the front of the reduced end of the mouthpiece may be provided with a cut-away portion 13.
From the above description it will be seen that I have provided a smoking pipe in which the tubes which cause the smoke to pass in a tortuous path from the pipe bowl to the mouthpiece, may be readily removed and replaced with a minimum expense.
It is evident that various changes maybe resorted to in the construction, form and ar- 80 rangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my in vention; hence, I do not intend to be limited to the particular embodiment herein shown and described, but
What I claim is 1. A smoking pipe comprising a bowl, a mouthpiece and a stem removably engaging the bowl and mouthpiece, an inner absorbent tube removably engaging the mouthpiece, and an outer absorbent tube loosely and wholly supported by the inner'tube.
2. A smoking pipe comprisin a bowl, a mouthpiece and a stem removab y engaging the bowl and mouthpiece, an inner absorbent tube removably engaging the mouthpiece, an outer absorbent tube loosely and wholl supported by the inner tube, and a front end closure for the outer tube carried entirely thereby.
3. A smoking pipe comprising a bowl having a short shan a mouthpiece and a stem removably engaging the bowl shank and mouthpiece an inner absorbent tube remov- Z 8 abl enga g the mouthpiece an outer ab sor ent tub e loosely and wholly supported by the inner tube,'and a front end closure for the outer tube carried entirel thereby, therear end of the bowl shank an the front 10 end of the mouthpiece having cut away portions ensuring unobstructed passages beyolned the front and rear ends of the outer tu Q 1 4. A smoking pipe comprising a bowl having a short shank and a ferrule secured thereto, a mouthpiece having a reduced front end and a stem having one end inserted into fsaid ferrule and the other end inserted over. the reduced front end of the mouthpiece, an in- 2o ner absorbent tube removably engaging the mouthpiece, an outer absorbent tube loosely and wholly supported by the inner'tube, and 4 a front end closure for the outer tube carried entirely thereby, the rear end of the bowl shank and the front end of the mouthpiece being shaped to ensure unobstructed passages 1belygnd the front and rear ends of'the outer In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention l have signed my name this 31st day of arch, 1930.
