SMOKING DEVICE March 15, 1932.
Filed July 8, 1931 Invenor MNQENT Russo Patented Mar. 15, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE VINCENT RUSSO, OF ROCKAWAY BEACH, NEW YORK SMOKING DEVICE Application led July 8, 1931. Serial No. 549,529. j
cigars, cigarettes and the like.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to provide a device of the aforementioned character in which means is employed for iltering or extracting impurities from the smoke which passes therethrough before reaching the mouth of the smoker.
It is a further object of the invention, to provide a device of the aforementioned character in which the smoke is caused to take a circuitous path in its passage through the device for the purpose of cooling the smoke.
A still further object of the invention, resides in the provision of a novel construction whereby the device may be readily taken apart and cleaned.
With the above and other objects in view, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention especially adapted for cigarettes, said figure showing a cigarette in position in the end of the holder, j
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of the device,
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the device taken at right angles to Figure 2,
Figure 4 is a view partly in elevation and partly in longitudinal section illustrating the interior portion of the device removed from the exterior thereof,
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 5 5 of Figure 4, and
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a modified form of smoke filtering device.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, a smoking device constructed in accordance with the present invention comprises an outer tubular member 10 shaped to provide a mouth bit 1l through which passes a. smoke passage 12. A cigar or cigarette carrying element 13 is removably carried by the end of the tubular member 10 opposite to the mouth bitl end 11, and this element is removably att,
tached to the member 10 by means of a oint 14 which may be either of the screw type or slip type as preferred. This outer tubular member 10 is hollowed out as illustrated at 15, and is provided with a projecting portion 16 which surrounds the entrant end of the smoke passage 12 for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
Mounted within the outer tubular member 10, there is an inner tubular member 17 having a reduced end 18 which is adapted to surround the projecting portion 16 and form a tight joint therewith as best illustrated in Figures 2 and 3. The tapered portion 18 is at the rear end of the member 17, and at its for- Y.
ward end it is rounded as indicated at 19. Mounted within the tubular member 17, there is a'tubular member 20 and said tubu lar member 2() is provided with vanes or similar walls 21 which space it from the inner wall of the tubular member 17 to provide upper and lower smoke passages 22 and 23 re* spectively.` At its rear end this inner member 20 has an upstanding wall 24 which prevents the smoke from passing from the upper passage 22 directly to the interior of the member 17 and also serves with the vanes or iianges 21 to cause the smoke to pass to the forward portions of the tubular member 17. An opening 26 is formed at the rear end of the inner member 20 and this opening 2G provides an eXit opening for the smoke which passes through the inner tubular member 20. The inner tubular member passes through the rounded end 19 of the tubular member 17 and projects therebeyond as indicated at 28 and the outer end of this extension 28 is open for the purpose of receiving a projecting portion 29 which extends rearwardly from the cigarV or cigarette receiving recess 30 of the member 18 as indicated at 31 in Figures 2 and 3.
A smoke purifying element 35 is employed and this element may be formed from any suitable material such as cotton or the like which will perform the function of absorbing moisture and extracting impurities from the smoke as it passes through the tubular member 20.
The device operates in the following manner:
With the several parts in their assembled position as illustrated in Figures 2 and 3, the smoke passes through the inner tubular member 2O and is discharged therefrom through the opening 26 into the upper smoke passage 22. The partitions or vanes 21 cause the smoke to pass forwardly in the smoke passage 22 to the forward end of the tubular member 17 where it passes through openings 40 to the smoke passage 23 and thence to the tubular member 17 and through the smoke passage 12 to the mouth of the smoker.
Thus it will be apparent that the invention provides a device in which the impurities are extracted from the smoke and in which the smoke is caused to take a circuitous path for the purpose of cooling the same.
The device may be employed without the inner tubular members 17 and 21, and in this form of the invention, the smoke purifying element in the form of a flat disk Ll5 is inserted in the device and secured in position by means of the member 13, the element 415 being clamped between the inner end of the element 13 and the shoulder 42 of the outer tubular member 10.
hile the invention has been herein illustrated in a preferred form, it is to be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the specific construction herein shown, and that it may be practiced in other forms without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and what it is desired to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
