To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JUDSON L. THOMSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoking-Pipes, &c., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. l

This invention relates more particularly to a lpipe or other article for smokers use in whic the smoke is properly filtered, purified and cooled before entering the mouth.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple and efiicient'means which is adapted to be used in connection with pipes, cigar or cigarette holders of various kinds and which compels the smoke to pass through a filtering material held or confined within a device or receptacle provided therefor so as to properly cool and purify the smoke and remove all heat, dust and moisture therefrom, thereby preventing the tongue from being burned or the throat of' the smoker becoming dry and sore, and which is so constructed t at it removes the poisonous nicotin which very often results in cancerof the lips, throat, or tongue, andat the same time provides' much greater comfort and pleasure in smoking than is obtained from the usual pipe or similar article as ordinarily constructed.

Another object ofthe invention isto provide means whereby salivaand other moisture may be collected in. such a way as to permit the pipe or article to be readily cleaned without permitting the moisture or saliva to injuriously affect the filtering device or the material confined therein.

A -further object of the invention is to provide simple and efficient means which may be applied to various constructions of pipes and other articles, which is thoroughly sanitary in its construction, and which 1s so made that the filtering part of the pipe or article may be quickly-removed, cleaned and replaced,or a new one inserted.

With these *and other objects-in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularlydescribed with reference to the accompanying drawinvs, which form a part of this specificatlon, and will then be pointed out in t e claims at the end of the description.

The pi e 10 is provided with a bowl 11 of the usua or of any preferred construction which is adapted to contain the smoking tobacco, and which may have a cooling and moisture collecting chamber 11, and projecting from the bowl is an extension 12 in which the part 13 of the stemlf is 'adapted to fit. The end 13 may haye a tapering portion 15 adapted to fit a taperin openino in the extension 12 of the pipean said end or member 13 may be extended'inward somewhat, 'as at 16, to provide a chamber 17, the outer end of which is open, as at 18, for the smoke to pass therein. The member 13 is provided with the threaded stem or part 19 which is adapted to engage a threaded opening in a coupling member 20, the outer end of which is provided with a threaded recess adapted to engage the threaded end 210i the mouth-piece or-member 22,v thus forming the stem of three detachable members.

The member 13 is provided with a recess 23 in which is adapted to fit a filtering device 24. As shown this filtering device is cylindrical, and is provided with a casing or body member 25, and a cap or cover member 26 which is detachably heldto the body member in any desired way, and confined within the casing of the filtering device is a suitable filtering material 27, as charcoal, which fills substantially the entire space within the casing so as to cause the smoke to come in contact therewith when passing through said device, in order that thesmoke may be cooled, purified and any polsonous substance contained therein removed from the smoke. The casing 25 has one end curved, as at 28, and this end is provided soA with a plurality of openings or apertures 29 v and' said cap member 1sprovided with an annular shoulder 32', while the casing' is provided with an annular shoulder 3 for a purpose to be presently described. The cap member 26 may be held to the casing or body by screw threads, or said cap member may be provided with a depressed portion 34 which is adapted to move in an L- shaped depressed groove or vportion formed in the reduced part 36 of the casing 25. The reduced part 36 extends substantially the entire length of the cap member 26 so as "fo hold the proper quantity of the filtering material when, the cap member is removed for any purpose, and said reduced portion normally abuts against an inner shoulder, as at 37, of the cap member. It will b e seen Vthat when the cap member is forced inwardly along the `part 36, the depressed portion may be made to pass along the longer part of the depressed groove 35 and by giving the cap member a partialrotation, the said depressed part 34 will enter the angular portion 38 of said groove and will lock the cap to the body portion.

The member 13 of the pipe stem has its chamber 17 somewhat smaller in diameter than the chamber or recess 23 in which the body of the filtering device 24 is adapted to lit so as to provide a shoulder 39, and the member 20 ,of the stem is provided with a recess for chamber into which projects the cap member 26 ofi' said ltering device. T herecess or chamber 40 of the member 20 provides a 4'shoulder 41against which the shoulder 32 of the cap member of the filtering device is vadapted to rest, the shoulder 33 of the filtering device normally resting against the shoulder 39 of 'the member 13, thus the

13 and 20 with the recesses 23 and 40 'form a confining chamber for the filtering device between the shoulders of which the `filtering device is positively held so as to form a seal therewith. The threaded portion 19 of the member 13 is so made with respect to the position of the shoulders 39 and 41, that on the last one or two turns of the thread in joining the member 20 to the member 13, the shoulders of the device 24 will be forced against the shoulders of the

13 and 20 of the stem, thus preventing the smoke from passing around said filtering device, and causing the same to ass through and come in contact with the fi ter- `ing material contained therein.

To collect the saliva and to prevent the same from entering the filtering device and also to permit the saliva to be readil'yreextenslon 42, and said stem is provided with lateral openings 47 for the exit of the smoke, and adjacent to 'said lateral openin is a head or end 48 serving asa deiector gir the smoke and as a means to prevent the saliva from passing into the stem and back to the filtering device. The head 48 may be substantially conical in form, and around the extension and the device 45 is a chamber 49 which is large enough for the saliva to collect, and said chamber extends below the openings 47 so that the pipe may be readily cleaned before the saliva has collected in such quantity as to fiow back into the pipe through the filtering device.

The member or mouth-piece 22 may have a contracted opening 50 extending therethrough, and the outer end of said member may be enlarged, as at 51. The contracted opening 50 may be fiared outwardly at the enlarged part 51 to provide two or more lateral openings 52 formed by a deflector 53 which may be, concaved at its inner surface. The purpose of the lateral openings 52 and A deflector 53 is to prevent the smoke from 'concentrating at asinglepoint on the tongue of the smoker, which often results in injury to the tongue ln Fig. 2, the construction of the pipe is substantially the same as described in connection with Fig. 1, so far as the saliva connection and the manner of holding a filtering device within the stem of the pipe and forming the pipe stem of three detachable members is concerned. 54 and 55, and said device may be constructed substantially the same as the device 24, except thatit has a curved and substantially oval-body portion which is adapted to t in a chamber of the same form within the members 544 and 55 so as to be locked and detachably held between the shoulders 57 of the member 54 and theshoulder 58 of the coupling member 55. Having thus described my invention, I

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters lPatent 1. A pipe comprising a bowl, and a stem consisting of detachable sections formed with internal shoulders, in combination with a filtering device provided with perforated ends and with annular shoulders adjacent said ends.

2. '.llie combination With a pipe co1nprising a bowl and a stem made up of detachable sections provided with internal shoulders of a filtering device consisting of a cylindrical body portion perforated at one end and formed with an external shoulder, and having its opposite end circumferentially reduced and a perforated cap formed With an external shoulder, and fitting upon the reduced end of the body portion.

3. A smoker-s article having a chamber formed with confronting annular shoulders, in combination with a filtering device of cylindrical form consistin of a body portion-perforated at one en and reduced at its o posite end, and formed with an eX- terna shoulder, and a removable perforated,

cap fitting upon the reduced end of the body ortion, and formed with an external shoul er.

4. A smokers article, a filtering device comprising a casing formed with an end lhaving openings therethrough, and with a shoulder adjacent to said end, a cap member provided With a perforated outer end, and with a shoulder adjacent to said end, and a filtering material confined bet-Ween the cap member and the casing Within the same.

5. n a smokers article, a filtering device comprising a casing having openings therethrough at one 'end, and with a shoulder adjacentto said end, said casing havlng a reduced portion, a cap member detachably held to the reduced portion, said cap member being provided With a perforated outer end, and with a shoulder adjacent to sald end, and a filtering material confined between the cap member and the casing Withinl the same.
