Description

` UNITED STATES Patented May 31 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
`STEM FOR PIPES OR CIGAR OR CIGARETTE HOLDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,447, dated May 31, 1904.
Application filed February 18, 1904:. Serial No. 194,274. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ wwne it mag/concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES PARTRIDGE CAssIDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements vin Stems forPipes-or Cigar or Cigarette Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements Vin pipes and cigar and cigarette holders; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to effect improvements in the construction of the stem of a pipe or cigar or cigarette holder and to provide improved means to prevent the passage of nicotin to the user and to also prevent the passage of saliva to thev tobacco.
In the accompanying drawings, Figurel is a longitudinal sectional view of a pipe exhibiting one form of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view on a larger scale and showing the construction of the diaphragm.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of a cigar-holder, the stem of which is constructed and provided in accordance with my invention.
The stem l of a pipe or cigar or cigarette holder isprovided with separable sections 2 3, which are here shown as provided, respectively, with a threaded projection 4 and a threaded socket 5, whereby they may be Screwed together to form a'close joint. The said sections may be likewise joined together within the scope of my invention, and I do not* tions 13.
The diapartment its bore extending entirely through. the tube, and the same is provided with lateral openings 10. rlhe end of the tube in the compartment 8 is closed by a head or cap 11, which is here shown as screwed there- -to, so-that it may be removed to enable the bore kof the tube to be readily cleansed. On thesideof the diaphragm next to the chamber 7 is a hollow boss 12, which closes that end of the tube and is provided with perfora- Hence the diaphragm is provided with an air-passage, which enables the pipe or cigar or cigarette holder to be smoked. The nicotin is arrested by the diaphragm and held in the compartment 7, and the saliva from the mouth of the user collects in the compartment 8, as willbe understood, so that it cannot reach the tobacco.
The cap 11 on the end of the tube of the diaphragm prevents the entrance of any saliva into the tube 9 that may be forcibly sent by the smoker into the stem, such saliva impinging against the cap and falling into the compartmentS.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,
lthe construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention. i
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent. is-

2. A pipe, clgar or cigarette holder having a ehambered stem, a diaphragm in said ehamber, dividing the same into a compartment for nieotin and a compartment for saliva, said diaphragm having a tube forming an air-passageltherethrough, extending into the salivaeompartment, opening laterally into said oompartment and having a cap to prevent the passage of saliva therethrough and removable therefrom to enable the bore of said tube to be cleansed, said diaphragm being further provided, on the side neXt the nieotin-eompartment, with a hollow boss which closes that end of the tube and is provided with perforations.
