Description

May 15, 1934. w. H. I EVELLSy SMOKING PIPE Filed Feb. 1, 193s Patented May 15, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a pipe, the general object of the invention being to form the bowl of the pipe in such a manner that there is but little danger of the wind throwing ashes or burning tobacco into the smokers face and to provide means for preventing moisture and burning tobacco juices from entering the mouth of the user.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:-
Figure l is a sectional view through the improved pipe.
Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view of the removable member.
Fig. 4 is a section on line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
In these views, the numeral 1 indicates the bowl of the pipe, the numeral 2 the stem thereof, and the numeral 3 indicates the stem of the mouthpiece. The upper end of the bowl slopes downwardly toward the mouthpiece as shown at 4 and the front Wall of the bowl curves upwardly and rearwardly as shown at 5 so that this construction of the bowl prevents ashes and burning tobacco from being blown into the face of the user while motoring or walking in a strong wind.
A socket 6 extends from the end of the stem 2 towards the bowl and a small passage I connects the lower part of the bowl with the forward end of this socket. A tubular member 8 ts in this socket and has its forward end rounded to correspond with the inner end of the socket and this end of the member has an opening 9 therein which registers with the passage 7. The outer end of the member 8 is internally screw threaded to receive a part of a threaded plug 10 which is threaded in an enlarged end of the passage 11 of the mouthpiece 3. This member or plug 10 is formed with the passage 12 which forms a continuation of the mouthpiece passage and the front end of this plug 10 is reduced as shown at 14 which is located in the member 8 and has its wall spaced from the internal walls of said member 8, and the end of this reduced part is closed as shown.
A slot 15 is formed in the top of the reduced part so that smoke can enter the passage 12 and this slot is covered by a screen or gauze 16 which has its edges passing through slots 17 in the side Walls of the reduced part 14 which converge up Wardly as shown in Fig. 4. Thus this strip of gauze can be readily removed and replaced by a new one, whenever desired, as it is removably held in place by the slots 17.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the smoke will pass from the bowl through the passage '7 into the chamber formed by the member 8, this chamber acting to hold any moisture or juices from the tobacco. The smoke must pass to the top of the chamber and then pass down- Wardly through the gauze and the slot 15 into the passage 12 and then into the passage 11 so that the smoke is dry and free of moisture when it enters the mouth of the user. The parts can be separated by removing the plug 10 from the member 8 so that they can be readily cleaned and a new strip of gauze put in place when necessary and the plug 10 can be removed from the mouthpiece 3 Whenever desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new isz- A pipe of the class described comprising a bowl having a stem provided with a socket in its free end and a passage connecting the socket with the chamber in the bowl, a tubular member located in the socket and frictionally held therein and having an opening therein registering with the passage in the stem of the bowl, a plug partly threaded in the outer end of the tubular member and having a reduced part spaced from the walls of the tubular member with the inner end of said part closed, said reduced part having an opening in its upper portion, and a pair of slots in its side portions, one on each side of the opening, a mouthpiece threaded to the plug, and a strip of gauze passing over the opening and having its end portions passing through the slots whereby said strip of gauze is removably held in position.
WILLIAM H. LEVELLS.
