L. GANDY SMOKING PIPE Nov. 26, 1940.
Filed July 29, 1939 INVENTOR.
ATTORNEY.
Patented Nov. 26, 1940 PA NT) om n SMOKING PIPE Leon Gandy, Detroit, Mich. Application July 29, 1939, Serial No. 287,362
2 Claims.
My invention relatesto smoking pipes, and one objectof the inventionis to provide a long cooling passage. for the' smoke within a relatively short pipe stem, through which the smoke passes upon leaving the pipe bowl, before entering the mouth tof the smoker. I g
This. passage has a plurality of chambers, spacediapart to trap 'the'nicotine, and also the saliva so that the latter maynot enter the pipe bowl in order that .the smoke may be drawn freelyIthrough the passages in the pipe stem and without danger of. delivering nicotine saturated saliva into the mouth of the smoker.
A- further object is to provide against the collection of nicotine or saliva in the bottom of the pipe bowl, thereby avoiding the annoying guttural-like sounds produced by drawing the smoke through a moreor less moisture laden pipe bowl.
A further object is to provide means whereby the bowl of the pipe is supported in an upright position when placed on a table or other like support, thereby overcoming any tendency of the tobacco to spill from the pipe bowlwhen laid on a table or the like. This feature is especially desirable for display, or advertising purposes, especially when exhibiting the pipe in stores or shop windows.
Other advantages and improvements will hereafter appear:
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the pipe resting upon a table or other support, when not in use, or upon display.
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the bowl and pipe stem.
Figure 3 is an enlarged horizontal sectional View taken on line 3-3, of Figure 2, of the pipe stem and a fragment of the pipe bowl.
Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view on line 4-4 of Figure 3,-viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view on line 55, of Figure 3, as viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Figure 6 is a detail end elevation of the tapering plug projecting from the forward end of the pipe stem, showing a vertical groove for draining away moisture, which might otherwise collect in the bottomof the pipe bowl,-that the tobacco therein may remain dry.
The numeral I0, denotes the pipe bowl, and opening into said bowl is a channel ll, bored through a stub l2, integral with the pipe bowl.
An integral tapering extension or plug I4, projecting from the end of the stem I3 is fitted into a tapering socket infthe stub 'l2, of the bowl, the extension being boredto provide a smoke passage l5, connecting the lower portion of, the "pipe bowl with a relatively larger bore or chamb'erflii, in
the stem, closed at its outer screw-tapped end by a plug l1, having a conicalext'ension Ha, fitted'in a cone-shaped socket in the detachable mouthpiece 2,4; A kerf Hb, in the conical end oi thejplug I1, is provided to facilitate the removal of the plugby a screw-driver or other suitable instrument; when necessary to gain ac- ,cess to the chamber l6 for cleaning the latter.
Adjacent t ,o ,the smokeipa'ssage I5 extending irom'the'bowl' of the pipe, is are'turn smoke pas= sage 19, open to the chamber {6, (see Figure 3,) and extending forwardly and downwardly that it may discharge into a chamber 20, below and directly in the rear of the tapering extension plug H, (see Figure 2).
Open to the chamber 20, on the opposite side of the smoke passage l5, and inclined upwardly from the chamber 20, is a smoke passage 2|, running backwardly to an enlarged bore 22, into which extends a plug 23, integral with a mouthpiece 24, having a bore 25, connecting the passage 2I, with a recessed slotted opening 26, in the mouthpiece, into which the smoke is drawn, but
which serves to keep the tongue of the smoker out of direct contact with the relatively small bore 25, opening into said slotted opening, that and disagreeable biting or smarting action, resulting from direct contact with the end of the bore may be avoided.
Screwed into the wall of the chamber 20, is a removable screw-plug 28a, which on removal permits ready access into the chamber 20, for cleaning the latter.
It will be noted upon reference to Figures 1, 4' and 5, of the drawing, that the wall of the chamber 20, extends laterally across the underside of the pipe stem, providing in conjunction with the bottom of the pipe-bowl, a substantial supporting base for maintaining the pipe-bowl in an upright position, being thus adapted either for window or counter display purposes, or when the smoker temporarily rests his pipe on a table or other support, thus avoiding any danger of hot ashes spilling from the pipe-bowl as might occur if the pipe should tip over upon its side.
The tapering plug extension l4,bored rearwardly for the smoke-passage I5, and carrying the smoke from the bowl of the pipe, has a vertical transverse groove Ma, at its outer end, which in conjunction with an opening Mb, extending downwardly from the smoke passage I 5, serves to drain any slight moisture that may form at the bottom of the pipe bowl.
Having now pointed out the several parts by reference numerals, the construction of the pipe, and their coordinating relation will be understood. The flow of the smoke from the pipe-bowl to the mouth of the smoker may be readily traced by following the direction taken by the arrows, as indicated on several views of the drawing.
What I claim is:
1. In a smoking pipe; a pipe stem adapted to be detachably connectedwith a pipe bowl, having a substantially straight central smoke passage extending rearwardly from the pipe bowl and opening into a relatively larger bore forming a smoke chamber in said stem, adjacent to the end opposite the bowl a removable wall closure plug supported in said bore adapted to form the end wall of the smoke chamber, said closure plug provided with a tapering extension projecting rearwardly from the pipe stem to facilitate removal of the plug; a detachable mouth piece having a socket to receive the tapering extension of the closure plug, said mouth piece having a projecting stem with a smok passage therethrough; said detachable pip'e stem having a smoke passage connected with the smoke passage through the mouth piece and also with a relatively large transverse smoke chamber located adjacent the pipe bowl; said transverse smoke chamber, extending below and across the bottom of the stem, providing in conjunction with the bottom of the pipe bowl an enlarged base, adapted to support the pipe in an inclined upright position, when resting on a suitable support, whereby moisture in the stem may drain, and the pipe held secure against spilling the ashes contained in the bowl. 2. In a smoking pipe; a pipe stem, detachably connected with a pipe bowl, having a central smoke passage leading from the bowl; a relatively large bore forming a smoke chamber, aligned and connected with the central smoke passage at the outer end of the pipe stem; a removable wall plug, adapted to provide a closed end wall for said smoke chamber, having an extension projecting beyond the end of the pipe stem, whereby the plug may be readily removed for cleaning the smoke chamber; a detachable mouth piece having a socket to receive the extension of the plug, said mouth piece formed with an integral stem having a smoke passage therethrough; a relatively large transverse smoke chamber in the pipe stem; adjacent the end of the stem connected with the pipe bowl and below the central smoke passage in said pipe stem; a clean-out closure cap fitted to the end wall of the transverse smoke chamber; a smoke passage in the stem, adapted to convey the smoke delivered into the smoke chamber aligned with the central smoke passage at the outer end of the pipe stem into the transverse smoke chamber in the pipe stem adjacent the pipe bowl; and a smoke passage in the pipe stem adapted to deliver the smoke in the transverse smoke chamber to the smoke passage leading to the smoke passage through the mouth piece.
