MARION L. THOMAS, 0F PASADENA, CALIFORNIA.
SMOKING IMPLEMENT.
Application filed December 16, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARION L. TnoMAs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pasadena, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Smoking Implements, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to tobacco, and has .with flicking ashes off of the cigar, cigarette or the pipe portion of the device and wherein, furthermore, smoke will be prevented from escaping from the body of the device and can only be drawn through the usual mouthpiece.
The invention still further contemplates a device which can be carried in the pocket 'while in use and wherein only the mouthpiece and the tube communicating with the evice and forming a part thereof will be visible.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a art of this specification, in which similar c aracters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation, showing the cover applied, with the cover, parts of the body of the device and a portion of the mouthpiece broken away, with the underlying parts shown in section; Fi 2 is a perspective view of a cigarette hold ing member which can be used in connection with the de vice; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a tobacco holder adapted to contain loose tobacco and which can be used in connection with the device. 7
Referring more particularly to the views, I provide a substantially frusto-conical body 10 having a central passage 11 terminating at its upper end in a basin 12, the portion of the body 10 forming the Wall of the basin 12 being preferably threaded to receive a cover 13 with the other or tapered end of the body Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 24, 1914.
Serial No. 807,127.
10 being carried by a hook-like stem 14 having connected thereto a suitable flexible tube 15 carryinga mouthpiece 16.
As stated, the device is adapted for use in smoking cigarettes, cigars or loose tobacco and in the event that it is desired to smoke a cigar there is provided a cigar holdin member 17 consisting of a body 18 adapte to receive one end of the cigar and a tapered stem 19 carried by the body 18 and having a passage communicating therewith. The tapered end of the stem 19 is adapted to fit into the upper end of the passage 11 as shown, and, as mentioned, the cigar is held in the cigar holding member 17 so that the cigar will lie in a substantially vertical position. cover 13 is then placed upon the body 10, the said cover being preferably thrcadedly engaged with the body. The n per end of the cover 13 is closed and preierably provided with a central opening 20 which is normally closed by a spring-engaged disklike valve 21, the spring provided for holding the valve in position to close the opening 20 being one which, when the user sucks upon the mouthpiece 16, will permit the valve 21 to be moved away from the under side of the top of the cover 13, thus partially uncovering the opening 20 so as to ermit air to enter the cover, it being read- 11 understood that ,it is necessary to have a certain amount of air in the cover in order that the cigar or other smokable substance will burn properly and, furthermore, in order that the user can create sufiicient suction to receive the desired smoke in his month.
When it is desired to smoke a cigarette with the device there is provided a cigarette holding member 22 and which consists of a body 23 smaller than the body 18 and adapted to hold a cigarette of the usual construction, the said body having a tubular stem 24; of a tapered nature and which extends into the upper end of the assage 11 when the cigarette holding mem er 22 is applied to the body 10 in the same manner as the cigar holding member 17 is applied to the body. Similarly, when it is desired to smoke loose tobacco use is made of a tobacco holding member 25 consisting of a bowl-like body 26 having a tapered stem 27, with the tapered stem 27 adapted to fit into the upper end The cigar is now ignited and the,
restricted in cross section so that the cover 13 can readily be applied to the body 10 without interfering with the tobacco holding member 25.
From the foregoing description it will beseen that in the use of a device of the char acter described the smoker will not have to bother with any ashes produced while the substance which is being smoked is consumed and the basin 12 is provided to receive any ashes which may fall from a cigar or cigarette when the same is used in connection with the respective cigar and cigarette holding members described herein as applied to the body 18.
When the cigar", cigarette or loose tobacco to be smoked'has been placed in the respeetive members provided therefor and the said member engaged with the body 18 and ignited, the cover 13 is applied to the body as mentioned heretofore and the body and cover can then be conveniently placed in the pocket so that the user will not have to hold the same in his hand and need only retain the mouthpiece in his mouth. lhus there is provided a device whereby a person can comfortably smoke without having the smoke enter his eyes, while at the same time he can use both hands and the smoking implement provided herein will not interfere withthe use of his hands for other purposes misses whereby the said member will communicate with the interior of the body and will extend through the basin in the body, a cover for threaded connection with the outer threaded wall of the body to inclose a smokable article held on the tobacco holding member, and a spring-actuated valve normally closing an aperture in the cover and lyingwholly within the cover and on the under side of the top thereof, said valve being adapted to be operated to uncover the aperture, by suction created in the body and the passage and communicating with the interior of the cover through the smokable arlticle supported in the tobacco holding mem- In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
