ARTHUR J .WOLFF, OF BROOKLYN, NEWV YORK.
TOBACCO-PEPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,561, dated January 8, 1884.
Application filed April 30, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR J. WOLFE, of. Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it'appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in pipes, the object of the same being to provide means for preventing the nicotine from the tobacco from getting into the mouth, and also to prevent it from settling in the bowl or in the stem between the bowl and mouth-piece; and with these ends in view my invention consists in the parts and combinations of the parts, as will bemore fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my pipe, and Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the same.
A represents the bowl of the pipe, and B the stem thereof, both being preferably formed of a single piece of wood or other material, and communicating with each, other through the small'passage-way a." This bowl A is preferably formed in such a relative position to the stem B that when the mouthpiece of the latter is held in the mouth the bowl will stand in or approximately in a vertical position, so as to enable the bowl to be completely filled with tobacco without wasting any. Thestem B, which is open throughout its entire length, proj ects from thebowl on opposite sides thereof, and is provided at its outer end with the combined metallic ferrule and lining O, which latter snugly fits within the bore of the stem and forms a bearing for the plug D, which can be made of any suitable material. The combined ferrule and lining to tube 0 is also formed to overlap the lower end of the stem for the purpose of preventing the same from splitting or shrinking on the plug, and alsoto add to the appearance of the pipe. The up per end of the stem B is provided with the ferrule E, which latter, besides being ornamental, also protects the upper end of the stem and prevents it from splitting. The lower end of the stem B is adapted to receive the plug piece.
to the mouth-piece, while the outer step, d, is
considerably reduced in size and rests within the bore, with a considerable space between it and the inner face of the stem. This construction prevents the nicotine or other fluid from coming in contact with the small end of the mouth-piece, and consequently prevents it from being drawn up into the smokers mouth. Again, any saliva from the mouth passing into the stem cannot be drawn back through the mouth-piece, but will gravitate downward and rest against the plug, and by removing the-plug it can be completely removedby simply blowing through the mouth- Again, if the pipe should become foul after long usage, by simply removing the mouth-piece and plug and passing a rag, brush, cotton. or other suitable article through the bore of the stem the pipe can be thoroughly cleaned and rendered as sweet as a new pipe.
I have described the bowl as being made in tegral with the stem 5 but it is evident that it 7 could be made in a separate piece and perform its functions in a satisfactory manner.
This device is simple in construction, is durable in use, is easily kept clean, and can be manufactured at a small cost.
It is evident that slight changes in the shape of the several parts might be resorted to with out departing from the spirit of my invention, and henceI would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown and described, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my inventiomwhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the pipe bowl and stem, the latter being provided at its lower end with the combined metallic ferrule and I specification. in the presence of two subscriblining and at its upper end with the metallic ing Witnesses. ferrule of the removable plu and removable ,1 mouthpiece, all of the above parts being con- ARTHUR OLFF' 5 structed, combined, and adapted to operate as WVitnesses:
described. 0. '1. WILLIAMSON,
In testimony whereof I have signed this HEMAN A. TYLER.
