WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST WERNER, OF LEADVILLE, COLORADO.
TOBACCO-PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,258, dated November 15, 1887.
' Application filed June 21, 1887. Serial No. 242,010. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST WERNER, of Leadville, in the county of Lake and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Tobacco-Pipe, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a novel form of tobacco-pipe wherein the bowl is so connected to the base that it may be reversed and the fire held within the bowl, and wherein the base is provided with a receptacle for any proper absorbent, and provision is made for the cleaning of the stem and base.
Reference is to' be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a central sectional View of my improved form of pipe. Fig.2 is a side view of thepipe, representing it as it appears when the bowl is partially turned upon its pivotal connection with the base. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the pipe,.the stem being shown in section. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the pipe, representing the parts as they appear when in the position in which they are represented in Fig. 2.
In the drawings, 10 represents the base of the pipe, to which there is hinged a block, 11, and to this block 11 the bowl 12 is connected by a pivot-pin, 13. The bore of the bowl 12 extends entirely through said bowl, and in each end of the bowl there is an annular recess, 2, that is adapted to receive a flange, 3, that is formed upon the base 10, or'a flange, 4, that is formed upon the rim 14 of the cover 15.
The base 10 is provided with a chamber, 16, in which cotton or any other proper absorbing material may be placed for the purpose-of taking up the nicotine, and above this chamber there is arranged a button, 17, of ordinary construction. A passage, 5, leads from the bore of the stem 20 to the chamber 16, and in the end of this passage there is fitted a plug, 18, which may be removed for the purpose of facilitating the cleaning of the pipe. A hook, 19, is connected to the forward end of the base 10, and arranged to engage with one of the stops that is carried by the bowl 12, the coverrim 14 being provided with catches 6, that are also adapted to engage said stops when the position of the pipe is reversed.
With such a pipe as the'one above described, if the smoker does not desire to smoke an entire pipe fu11, he may preserve the fire by throw ing the block 11 back and turning the bowl upon its pivotal connection with the block, thereby reversing the position of the bowl, so that when the block 11 is moved back again to its normal position the flange 3 of the base 10 will enter the groove 2 at the top of the pipe-bowl, and then if the cover is applied to the bottom of the bowl, which bottom is at this time in the position normally occupied by the top of the bowl, the pipe may be placed in the pocket of the owner, and,as a certain quantity of air necessarily enters, a smoldering combustion will be carried on in the bowl, so that when the owner desiresto resume his smoke all that he has to do is to return the bowl to its normal position, draw a few puffs, and the pipe once more will be thoroughly ignited, thusavoiding the troubleofrelightingthe pipe.
Having thus fully described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters v Patent l. The combination, with the base having a smoke passage and an upward extending and pivoted'support, of a reversible bowl pivotally and permanently connected with said support, whereby the bowl may be reversed Without being detached from the standard, substantially as set forth.
2. In a pipe, the combination, with a base, of a blockhinged to said base, and a bowl open at both ends and pivoted at about the center of its length to said block, substantially as described.
3. In a pipe, the combination, with a base formed with a chamber, of a button arranged abovethe chambena flange formed upon the base, a block hinged to the base, a tubular bowl open at both ends and having upon each end an annular groove pivotally connected to the block, and means for securing the bowl to the base, substantially as described. 4. In a pipe, the combination, with a base formed with a chamber, 16, and an annular rim, and provided with a plug, 18, of a block hinged to the base, an open-ended tubular bowl pivotally connected to the block and having an annular groove in each end, and a cover connected to the bowl, substantially as described.
AUGUST WERNER.
