TOBACCO-PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of vLetters Patent No. 775,407', dated November 22, 1904.
Application filed December 17, 1903. Serial No.l85,503. (No model.)
To all 7,071,071?, t www concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. RrDnoU'r, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tobacco-pipes, and more particularly to such as are made separable to facilitate the cleaning of the same.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a simple and durable construction which will permit the pipe to be separated longitudinally, whereby the distillate of tobacco, saliva, and other objectionable matter can be conveniently and thoroughly removed from the tobacco-chamber' and the pipe-stem, thus rendering the pipe sweet and clean.
Other objects are to provide simple and elhcient means for locking the pipe-sections together. A
The invention consists in certain details of construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and illus-v trated in the accompanying drawings, in whichY Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved tobacco-pipe. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation showing one section of the pipe and Fig. 4 is an end view of the pipe. Fig. 5 is a detached perspective view of the locking-segment. Fig. 6 is a section taken on line y y, Fig. 3. Fig7 is a cross-section or' the pipe-stem, taken on line a 2, Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings in detail, like numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
The numeral l designates the bowl of the pipe; 2, the stem; 3, the mouthpiece, and L the ferrule by means of which the said mouth piece is secured to the stem.
tudinally to form companion sections 5 and 6.
The stem portion of one section is provided with a longitudinal medially-disposed groove y 7, which receives a corresponding rib 8, formed on the stem portion of the other section and arranged centrally in said groove, and on said rib are two narrow semicircular grooves 9, which are arranged to register when the two pipe-sections are placed together, yand thus form the smoke-passage leading from the tobacco-chamber 10 to the mouthpiece.
The ribs 11, bounding-the medially-,disposed groove 7 of one pipe-section, are continued along the marginal portions oi' the bowl portion of said section. as at l2, while the rib 8 on the stem portion of the other section is separated by the chamber portion thereofl and continued along the edge of said chamber portion, as at 13. whereby an overlapping or rabbeted joint is provided, whi ch prevents the air being drawn into the pipe-stem and the tobacco-chamber except through the open end of the bowl.
The two sections are connected permanently by a suitable hinge 14, secured to the lower edge or marginal portion of the sectional stems, which permits the sections to be separated without completely disconnecting the same and also permits the tobacco-chamber and smoke-passage to be conveniently and thoroughly cleaned.
When the pipe-sections are swung together, suitable means for clamping them must be provided, and this is done by the ferrule 4, which is made flaring and fits over the free end of the tapering pipe-stem, thereby clamping the stem portions securely together, also byvpivotally securing to the upper end of the bowl portion of one section a locking-segment 15, which corresponds with the contour of the upper edge of the other bowl portion and engages the same, said segment having an outer depending flange land an inner depending flange 17, which lie, respectively, against the outer and inner peripheral upper portion of the last mentioned ,y bowl portion, serving thereby to clamp the bowl portions firmly together. In addition to the foregoing clamping means lI provide a keeper 18, which-is pivotally connected to one section near the meeting face`of the bowl portion thereof and is'adapted for engagement with a pin 19, located at a corresponding point on the other section. I
IOO
In order that the pipe may be ornamental as well as hygienic, the locking-segment l5, in
conjunction with a similar segment 20, aiiixed to the upper end of the bowl portion, to which said locking-segment is pivoted, serves as a mounting and gives the pipe a finished appearance.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim isl. A tobacco-pipe Iseparable longitudinally to form two sections comprising each a bowl portion and a stem portion, a hinge connecting the lower edges of the stem portions, and a locking-segment hinged to the upper end of one bowl portion and engaging the upper' edge of the other bowl portion to securely lock the two together.
2. A tobacco-pipe separable longitudinally to form two sections comprising each a bowl portion and a stern portion, a hinge connecting the lower edges of the stem portions, a mouthpiece iitting over the free ends of the stern portions to hold the same together, and a locking-segment hinged to the upper end of one bowl portion and engaging the upper edge of the other bowl portion to securely lock the two together.
In witness whereofl l have aiixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. A
