TOBACCO PIPE.

INVENTOI? ATT .EYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT' @nnrcn.
JULIUS I-IACKENBERG, OFPASSAIO, NEW JERSEY.
TOBACCO-PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 544,808, dated August 20, 1895. Application filed April 18, 1895. Serial No. 546,213- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ULIUs HACKENBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Passaic, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved tobacco-pipe, the object of the same being to provide a pipe which possesses the advantage that it can, by providing two stems, be converted into a hanging pipe which can be used by a laborer when at work,-or into a more elegant pipe with a straight stem.
My invention to these ends consists of a smoking-pipe having a bowl provided at its base with two diametrically-opposite screwsockets that communicate bymeans ot'proper channels with the interior of the bowl, one of said sockets having a squared'off end which is parallel with the axis of the bowl, so as to permit the screwing thereinto of a straight stem at right angles to the axis of the bowl, and the other of which has a squared-oft end which is inclined inwardly from its lower edge, so as to permit the screwing thereinto of another stem having acurved mouthpiece, whereby the latter stem is arranged at an angle of inclination to the bowl, and the pipe converted into a hanging pipe. k
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front perspective view showing the pipe as usedin one form. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the pipe as used in the other form. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the bowl, showing the two stems in dotted lines as applied to the bowl and in full lines as detached; and Fig. 4: is a detail view of the screw-plug for closing the socket to which the stem is not applied. 7
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
For carrying out my invention the bowl A of the pipe has at its base two diametricallyopposite screw-sockets A A respectively, the screw-socket A having a squared-off end which is parallel with the axis of the bowl,
' while, on the other hand, the screw-socket A is inclined and has a squared-cit end which is inclined from its lower edge inwardly, be
ing therefore at an angle of inclination to the axis of the bowl. Two ducts a a. lead from the interior of the bowl into a channel a extending through the base of the bowl, so as to connect the two sockets.
When the pipe is to be'used by holding it in the hand, a straight stem 13, Fig. 1, having a straight mouthpiece B, is employed, said stem having a screw-threaded nipple B which is screwed into the socket A, so that the stem is seated firmly against the endof the socket, and is thereby arranged at rightangles to the axis of the bowl.
If a hanging pipe, Fig. 2, is desired, astem 0, having a curved mouthpiece C, is employed. The stem 0 is likewise provided with a screw-threaded nipple 0 which is screwed into the socket A so that the said stem is seated against the inclined end of said socket, andis thereby arranged at an inclination to the bowl.
When a stem is screwed into one socket, the other socket mustbe closed, and this is. done by means of a screw-plug D.
By means of the described form of pipe the various tastes of the smoker can be satisfied, as when he is at leisure he'can use the form shown in Fig. 1, and when at work the form shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- An interconvertible straight or inclined tobacco pipe, consisting of a bowl, provided at.
its base with screw sockets having connection with the interior of the bowl through passages in the base thereof, one of said sockets being located at right angles to the bowl and the other at an inclination to the same, a stem provided with a screw-threaded nipple for screwing into either of said sockets, and a screw-plug for closing the other socket, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JULIUS HAOKENBERG.
