ELLIOT P. GLEASON, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN GAS-LIGHTING TORCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,191, dated J ure 24, 1873; application filed January 4,1873.
the holder.
In the drawing like parts of the invention are pointed out by the same letters of reference.
The nature of the present invention relates to improvements in the construction of gaslighting torches of the class in which Wax tapers are employed, and pertains more directly to improvements in the construction of the runner or that portion of the torch in which the taper is held; the object of the in-v vention being to provide certain and reliable means for holding the taper.
To enable those skilled in the arts to make and use my invention, I will describe the same. A shows the handle of the torch, formed of wood or any suitable material, and B is a standard inserted in the same, the upper end of which may be provided with a key, 0, to
be used in turning on the gas. A tube, D,
MMW,
has one end inserted and held in the handle B, and within this tube D is received the runner or taper-holder E. This runner E is formed from brass or any suitable metal, and is made tubular in shape, the metal being continued in the manufacture so that two lips will be formed, between which lips one end of the wax taper F employed is inserted. Swiveled to one of these lips, and made sufliciently wide to be passed over both when closed, is the clasp c, employed to be closed over the lips after one end of the taper F has been inserted between them, and thus hold the taper rigidly in position between the lips. After the taper has been so secured the lipped portion of the runner or taper-holder is inserted in the tube D, the tubular portion of the same projecting beyond the tube D, and forming a means of moving the taper-holder up and down Within the tube D, as desired. The end of the taper is thus securely held in position, and all liability of the taper to fall out or become loose is entirely prevented.
Having now set forth my invention, what I claim as new is The combination, with the taper-holder E, of the clasp 0, when the same shall be constructed and operate substantially as described.
