Beit known that I, DANIEL CROWLEY, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Canes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to au improvement in combination-canes.
The object is to provide a cane which can be converted at short notice into an umbrellahandle, a horse-whip, or a fishing-rod stock, and which shall be adapted to receive Within it, when not in use, the u1nbrella-cover, horsewhip tip, fshingrod tip, cigars, pipe, and matches.
Vith these ends in view, my invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed outin the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a View of the cane, the side being broken away Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the umbrella-cover open and ready to be adjusted on the cane. Fig. 3 shows the same adjusted for use. Fig. 4 represents a fishing-rod tip adjusted for use, and Fig. 5 represents a whip-tip adjusted for use.
A represents the body of the cane. lt is hollow and is preferably formed of sheet metal covered with a thin coating of some iiexible materialcotton cloth, for eXamplewound spirally thereon; but it may consist of other material than sheet metal, provided only it be formed hollow. The handle B is also formed hollow, and is conveniently hinged to the body, as shown at b, and provided with a spring-catch, b, adapted to lock it to the body in closed adjustment. The handle might,how ever,be provided with a female threaded socket adapted to receive the end of the body A, the latter being provided with a male thread; or the handle might be provided with a male thread adapted to engage a female thread in the end of the body; or it might be secured to the body in any other well-known or approved manner.
The body A is tipped with aferrule, C, provided with a projecting smooth or threaded boss, c. Through the ferrule extends a perforation, c', adapted to receive a locking-pin, as will hereinafter appear.
D represents the umbrella-cover folded and incased within the cane, the spreaders d being secured to a band, d', which is constructed to collapse when the top is folded. A second band, d2, at the top is adapted to slide over the ferrule C, and is provided With a locking pin, E, adapted to extend through the band d2 and perforation c in the ferrule. The lower band, d, is also provided with a spring-actuated pin or dog, e, adapted to engage :a socket or notch, a, in the body of the handle when the umbrella-top is secured therein in open adjustinent.
The umbrella top, when folded and incased within the body A of the cane, is held within reach of the hand at the base of the handle by means of an elastic cord, F, secured to the handle end of the body and to a follower, f, which is adapted to engage the end of the folding top and prevent it from working too far toward the tip of the cane.
The horse-whip tip G is provided with a socket, g, on its large end adapted to receive the ferrule and boss on the end of the case, and it has a lockinglpiu, E', attached to it to secure it in position, as shown. The whiptip G may be stored within the cane-body A, as shown in Fig. l.
H represents the tip of a fishing-pole, which is provided with a socket, h, on its large end adapted to iit the ferrule on the cane the same as the whip-tip, and with a lockingpin, E, to secure it thereon. The tip H may also be stored Within the cane, as shown in Fig. l.
Within the handle of the cane is a chamber adapted to receive matches, I; and a pipe, K, and cigars L may also be incased within the body or handle, or both.
The cane may also be used to lengthen out a fishingrod of ordinary length, provided with a socket on its end adapted to receive the cane-tip.
The cane-tip may be provided with a cap adapted to fit over the boss c. This would be particularly advantageous when the boss was constructed with a thread, as it would keep the dirt from clogging the thread.
It is evident, also, that manyr articles not enumerated might be carried within the cane with convenience, and that slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangements of its parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not Wish to limit myself strictly to the construction herein set forth.
I am aware that a combination-cane, consisting, essentially, of a hollow cane carrying an umbrella-top, which latter can be removed and secured in open position to the cane, is not new; also, that a hollow cane having a hollow handle for the reception of matches is old; hence I make no claim, broadly, thereto.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is=
As a new article of manufacture, a cane havwhip-tip, or fishing-rod tip, the said ferrule having a transverse opening therein for the entrance 0f a locking-pin, substantially asset forth.
