UNITED STATES PATENT orrrca.

PIPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 27, 1914. Serial No. 841,326.
-'tobacco therein where it usually simmers and prevents a pleasant smoke which would otherwise be had if such a disagreeable feature were eliminated. -And to this end the invention consists in providing a tobacco pipe with a trap and arranging the trap intermediate of theends of the bore so that when the pipe is in use any saliva that finds its way into the bore will be directed into the trap.
Other objects will appear and be better understood from that embodiment of my invention of which the following is a specification; reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which I Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of one form of a tobacco pipe showing my invention applied thereto and Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of another form of tobacco pipe showing my invention applied thereto and also showing parts broken away for the purpose of clearness. I V
Referring to the drawings in detail 1 indicates the bowl of the pipe, 2 the stem thereof and 3 my improved. bit.
The bowl and stem are of usual shape and may be made of any suitable material such as is used in the manufacture of tobacco pipes now in use. 7
The stem is provided with the usual bore 4, and has its end provided with an interiorly arranged screw threaded portion or socket 5 which is adaptedvto be detachably secured to the end of thebit 3. A
The bit as shown is of usual shape and has one end reduced to provide a screw threaded projection 6 which is fitted within the socket 5.
The bit is centrally bored as at 7 and a trap 8 is arranged intermediate of the ends' of the bore and projects beyond the lower side of the bit. The trap is arranged in angular relation to the bore andis provided for the purpose of catching any saliva, from the mouth of one using the pipe, that finds its way into the bore. By providing the bore with a depending portion as indicated at 9 and directing this depending portion into the trap itwill be obvious that any saliva that may find its way along the top of the bore will be directed into the trap. It is preferred to form the bit of a transparent or translucent material sothat at all times the contents of the trap may be observed and removed when a suflicient quantity has accumulated therein.
To provide a means for readily removing the accumulated saliva from the trap the Patented Apr. 6, 1915.
lowerend of the same is provided with a screw threaded closure 10.
What I claim as new is A mouth piece. for a pipe comprising a bit having at one side a downwardly disposed hollow trap, a detachable closure for the 'trap, said bit having an interiorly located depending portion disposed diametrically of the trap and entering the same but terminating short of the lower end thereof the sides of said depending port-ion converging toward each other and meeting each other at an edge which is spaced from the lower end of the trap for a distancegreater than the internal diameter of the trap, said bit being provided'with bores which enter the trap at the upper end thereof and at the opposite sides of the said depending portion and which extend to the opposite ends of the bit.
.In testimony whereof Paflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
