TOBACCO-PIPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 14, 1914.
Application filed October 8, 1913. Serial No. 794,112.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD REDFERN, a citizen of the Dominion of New Zealand, and residing at 107 College Hill, Auckland, in the Provincial District of Auckland, in the Dominion of New Zealand, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to the class of pipes designed to prevent moisture and saliva being drawn into the mouth of the smoker.
According to this invention the pipe bowl has a cylindrical bore passing right through it and a removable cap is provided which is used to close the bottom of the bowl when the pipe is being smoked and to close the upper end when the bowl is being reloaded, the reloading being effected from the bottom.
The cap is provided with a removable plug of absorbent material.
The invention is illustrated in the drawing wherein Figure l, is a central sectional elevation. Fig. 2, a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the pipe reversed for reloading. Fig. 3, a similar view showing the cap removed, and, Fig. 4, a plan of the cap.
The bowl, 1, of the pipe has the plain cylindrical bore 2 and the stem 3.
A cap 4 having a portion 5 adapted to closely fit the bore, has a circular recess 6 to receive a removable wad 7 of absorbent material which may be composed of absorbent paper, or of plaster of Paris or clay mixed with charcoal.
When it is desired to fill the pipe, the cap is removed from the bottom and fitted into the top of the bore (as shown in Fig.
2). The tobacco is then filled in from what is normally the bottom of the bore, the ash remaining from a previous smoking being first withdrawn or being forced in front of the tobacco to the top of the bowl where it facilitates the lighting of the fresh tobacco.
As shown in Fig. 4, the cap has a flange which may be roughened upon its edge 8 to provide a grip for the fingers and thumb.
W hat I do claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is A tobacco pipe comprising a bowl, a cylindrical bore therethrough, a stem, a recessed cap adapted to fit both ends of the bore and a removable wad of absorbent material fitting said recess, substantially as herein set forth and illustrated.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
