Description

L. RICHARDS.
TOBACCO PIPE.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 10, 1911.

WITNESSES INVENTOR WW flmmiRo-wmw midnamkh om c MBIA PLANOORAPH (20., WASHINGTON. n. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LUTELLAS RICHARDS, OF ATWATER, OHIO.
TOBACCO-PIPE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUTELLAS RICHARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atwater, in the county of Portage and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tobacco-Pipes, of which improvement the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in tobacco-pipes, relat ing particularly to that class of pipes in which the stem portion thereof is divided longitudinally into two parts to permit cleaning of the draft opening of collected nicotin.
The invention has for its objects, to pro vide a simple and practical means for securing the stem sections to one another and for securing the mouth piece to the stem sections.
lVith the above objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangements of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein like detail parts are designated by like numerals of reference in the several views, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved pipe, in longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front view thereof. Fig. 4 is an inverted plan view of the upper section of the pipe proper. Fig. 5 being an inverted plan view of the lower section of the pipe proper, or stem portion.
As shown, the pipe portion proper, comprises the two sections 1 and 2, divided longitudinally through the draft opening 3 which communicates with the interior of the bowl 1, by way of the opening 5, the divided stem of the pipe being tapered at its end, for a suitable distance, to a greater degree than otherwise.
To the underside of the pipe bowl end of the section 1 is secured a suitable spring clip 6, preferably bent in a form corresponding somewhat to the underside portion of that end of the section 2, passing along a suitable groove 7, or not, as may be desired, and engaging at its end in a suitable recess 8 formed in said section, which clip exerts Specification of Letters Patent.

an upward pressure and maintains an air tight oint between the two sections at the bowl end of the pipe.
Fitted over the tapered ends of the stem sections is a suitable mouth-piece 9, preferably containing a removable nicotin absorbing disk 9, said. mouth-piece having its stem engaging opening tapered correspondingly.
Slidably fitted over the mouth-piece and pipe stem, is a correspondingly tapered sleeve 10, which further secures the stem sections in an air tight manner, as well as secures the mouth piece to the stem.
The two stem sections are further provided with suitable means to insure registration of the same at the mouth-piece ends, the means here shown being the small pins 11 on one section and registrable openings 12 in the other.
To clean the pipe, the sleeve 10 is slidably removed over the mouth-piece, and the mouth-piece removed from the stem, after which the stem sections are slightly separated, to withdraw the pins 11 from the openings 12, and the lower section 2 withdrawn from beneath the spring clip, thus permitting both sections to be readily cleaned of any nicotin collected in the draft opening 3. The disk 9 is also removed from the mouth piece and a new one substituted.
WVhile I have shown and described my invention in connection with a certain form of tobacco pipe, and as there are many forms of pipes to which the improvements may be applied, as well as changes in details, arrangement, and application, it is to be considered that 'such would be within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. A tobacco-pipe divided longitudinally through the stem, forming two sections, one carrying the bowl, a spring clip secured to the bowl end of one section and clamping the other section thereto, and a mouth-piece engaging over the stem ends of said sections.
2. A tobacco-pipe divided longitudinally through the stem, forming two sections, one carrying the bowl, a spring clip secured to the bowl end of one section and clamping the other section thereto, a mouth piece engaging over the stem ends, and a sleeve engaging over the -mouth-piece and stem sections.
3. A tobacco pipe divided longitudinally over the stem ends, and a sleeve engaging 10 through the stem, forming two sections, one over the mouth piece and stem. carrying the bowl, a spring clip secured to In testimony whereof, I have hereunto the bowl of the one section and projecting signed my name in the presence of two subtoward the stem, the one end oiithe other scribing Witnesses.
