UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' SMOKING-PIPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 22, 1921.
Application filed March 27, 1920. Serial No. 369,260.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonen A. Hicnrmtn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoking- Pipes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improve ments in smoking pipes, and it is an object of the invention to provide a pipe of this general character embodying novel and improved means whereby the possibility of formation of the wet heel, or the like, is substantially eliminated.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a pipe of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the smoke before being drawn through the mouth piece is caused to travel in a manner whereby the smoke, when entering the mouth of the smoker, is relatively cool.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and ar rangement of the several parts of my improved pipe whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that in invention may be the better understood, will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation, illustrating a pipe constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; and
Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of the sleeve insertible within the bowl, detached.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, B denotes a bowl having extending outwardl from the lower portion thereof a stem b. The bore of the stem S extends inwardly of the base portion of the bowl and said inner portion of the bore or that portion within the bowl operates as a reservoir or collecting chamber for saliva.
A wall of the bowl has disposed therethrough in a direction substantially parallel with the axis of the chamber of the bowl a restricted port 1, open at the outer edge of the bowl and communicating with the stem.
Snugly fitting within the chamber of the bowl is 'a sleeve 2, preferably of infusible material. The lower or inserted end of the sleeve is provided with a substantially concavo-convex'head 3, having formed therethrough a plurality of restricted openings 4.
The outer or open end of the sleeve 2 is defined by an outstanding annular flange 5 which abuts the outer edge of the bowl B when the sleeve is in applied position. The inner face of the flange 5 is provided with an annular groove 6 which registers with the port 1.
In communication with the annular groove 6 is a spiral groove '7 formed around the periphery of the sleeve 2 and which groove is opened at the lower or inserted end of the sleeve. The sleeve 2, when applied, is spaced from the bottom of the chamber of the bowl so that the smoke is drawn from within the sleeve 2, through the spiral groove 7 and into the stem S through the port 1. The tobacco is packed within the sleeve 2 in a conventional manner and the same is substantially entirely consumed due to the fact that the possibility of a wet heel forming in the lower or inserted end of the sleeve 2 is substantially eliminated. The passage of the smoke from the sleeve 2 to the stem S is such as to assure the smoke, when drawn into the mouth of the smoker, being substantially cool. The under surface of the stem S in alinement with the port 1 is provided with an opening 8 normally closed by a plug 9. The opening 8 affords means whereby the port 1 may be cleaned out should the requirements of practice so necessitate.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a pipe constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly'well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof, and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
In combination with a tobacco pipe havin a restricted port disposed through the wall of the bowl and in communication with the bore of the stem, at sleeye snugl ynfitting Within the chamber of theehowl and .,provided at its inserted end with a perforate head, the opposite end of v the sleeve wbei-rg g, defined by a flange for contact with the outer 1 edge-0f the bow-l -the contacting face of the flange "being provided with an annular groove registering with the restricted port, ,the gr o oveofhthe flange being in communication with a Emma in the periphery of the 10 sleeve epen at the bottomrof the sleeve.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature. 1 V
