UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CIGARETTE HOLDER OR THE LIKE.
Application filed January 27, 1923.
T 0 all whom it may oonoem Be it known that I, Josr': DANIEL GAnoiA, a citizen of Cuba, residing in Buenos Aires, Argentina. have invented a new and useful Cigarette Holder or the like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a cigarette holder or the like and one of the objects of the invention is to provide a device of this character for filtering the smoke, so that a considerable portion of the combustion matter, impregnated with nicotine will remain inside the cigarette holder, instead of going into the smokers system, thus rendering smoking less harmful.
Another object of the invention is to] provide a filtering tube having openings therein so formed that they will not become clogged up with use and so that the smoke as it passes through the openings will clean themselves.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists of certain novel and peculiar features of construction and combination of parts as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which similar characters of refer ence indicate similar parts.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my improved cigarette holder.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of the filtering tube.
Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the filtering tube, and Fig. 5 is a transverse section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
The cigarette holder comprises an outer casing 1 having a mouth piece 2, the said casing at its outer end being provided with an internal thread 3 which engages a similarthread 4 carried by the filtering tube 5.
The outer casing 1 is hollow and is adapted to receive the filtering tube as shown in Fig. 1. The tube 6 of the mouth piece 2 projects inwardly into the hollow casing, the space between the projections 7 and the wall of the outer casing 1 thereby provides angle shaped cavities 8, which prevents the solid and liquid matter deposited from the smoke from getting into the smokers mouth.
The filtering tube is provided with an outer head 9 for holding the cigarette. For
Serial No. 615,292.
filtering the smoke, the main body of the tube is provided with a plurality of longitudinal slits 10, the length of which, in a cigarette holder will preferably be about two inches. The width of these openings, at any given part of the entire length, will be approximately two thousandths of an inch and the width must be exactly the same throughout the length of the slits, so that the smoke will pass through at all points in exactly the same proportion. The length and width of the openings, as well as the number of the same, can be modified, to secure the desired area of openings.
The slits '10 are formed by bending outwardly the walls of the tube, so that the inner surface 11 of the filtering tube is continued out laterally to the end of the slits, so that there is no obstruction to the exit of the solid and liquid particles entrained in the smoke, which would tend to clog the slits. The only resistance therefore opposed to the passage of. the smoke will be that part of the inner surface of the filtering tube at the narrowest width of the opening, which will be at its end. By this construction, the smoke, as it leaves the combustion matter on the outer surface of the filtering tube, will clean the openings as it passes through them. In fact, the openings 10 will remain clean until such a time as that the quantity of combustion matter in the space 12 surrounding the filtering tube will be so.filled as to clog the openings, when it will be time for cleaning.
The inner end of the filtering tube, is closed by inserting the rubber stopper 13, the purpose of this construction being to facilitate cleaning ofthe filtering tube.
From the above description, it will be apparent that I have provided a device of the character described, which possesses all the features enumerated as desirable and while I have illustrated and described the preferred form of the invention, it will be understood that I reserve the right to all changes properly falling within the scope and spirit of the appended claims.
Therefore, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A cigarette holder comprising an outer casing, a filtering tube therein, a plurality of slits in the filtering tube, the said slits presenting an unobstructed passage for the smoke to the outer surface of the filtering tube.
2. A cigarette holder comprising an outer casing, a filtering tube therein, a plurality 5 of slits extending lengthwise of the filtering tube, the inner surface of the tube being extended laterally to the outer surface of the filtering tube to form walls for the slits whereby the said slits present an un0bstructed passage for the smoke to the outer sur- 10 face of the filtering tube.
Buenos Aires, Argentina, January 3rd, 1923.
JOSE DANIEL GARGiA.
