Behar, 11 Candle Road, Levittown, Pa.) Filed Apr. 25, 1962, Ser. No. 190,134) Claims priority, appiieation Israel Sept. 27, 1961 1 Elana. (ill. 131176) The present invention relates to smoking pipes, it being an object of the invention to provide a novel smoking pipe which can be used in the wind or while held in various positions.
A smoking pipe constituting a preferred embodiment of the invention is described below for illustrative purposes only, since the invention and its several features could be embodied in many other smoking pipes.
In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a smoking pipe constructed in accordance with the invention;
FIG. 2 is a front plan view of the bowl structure of the pipe of FIG. 1; and
FIG. 3 is a perspective view of the smoking pipe of FIGS. 1 and 2.
The smoking pipe illustrated comprises a vertically disposed bowl 1 being formed with a cavity 2, and a stem 3 having a smoke duct 4 communicating with the lower portion of the cavity 2. Duct 4 extends along the longitudinal axis of the stem 3 and substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal vertical axis of the bowl 1.
The bowl 1 includes a flat horizontal closure 5 across its upper end portion, which closes the top of the cavity 2. A side wall of the bowl 1 is formed with an opening 6 symmetrically disposed with respect to smoke duct 4 and the axis of bowl 1. Opening 6 is adapted to be closed by a second closure member 7 hingedly attached to the lower portion of the opened side wall of the bowl and adapted for pivotal movement in a plane containing the vertical longitudinal axis of the bowl 1 and the duct. The height of closure member 7 is less than that of opening 6 whereby air necessary to support combustion of tobacco in cavity 2 may enter the cavity through the space between the top of closure 7 and the top cover 2, when the closure 7 is pivotally moved to its closed position.
A hinge 8 is secured between the bottom portion of closure member 7 and the stem 3 to provide the pivotal mounting for member 7. Hinge 3 is provided with a spring 9 for normally urging closure member 7 to its closed position.
The opening 6 is preferably formed in the sidewall of bowl 1 facing the user. in addition, it is also preferable to form the sides of opening 6 and the cooperating sides of pivotal closure member 7 with beveled edges.
in use, closure member '7 is pivoted to opened position when it is desired to fill (or clean out) the pipe bowl 1. After the tobacco in the bowl is lit, the closure mem her '7 is returned to its closed position. The air necessary to support the combustion of the tobacco passes into the pipe bowl through space it The fixed closure 5 and the pivotal closure 7 hold the tobacco contents in the bowl even should there be wind or should the pipe be held in other than a horizontal position.
While the invention has been described with respect to a preferred embodiment thereof, it will be understood that many modifications can be made in the described embodiment and that the various described features, alone or in combination, can be used in other forms and applications without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined in the following claim.
I claim:
In a smoking pipe, 21 substantially cylindrical vertically disposed bowl having a tobacco receiving cavity therein, a stem having an axial smoke duct arranged substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the bowl and communicating with the lower portion of said cavity, said bowl having an upper end portion having a flat and hori- Zontal closure thereon, and an opening in the side wall portion thereof symmetrically disposed with respect to the said smoke duct and said bowl axis, said bowl having a second closure for said side :wall opening, hingedly attached to the lower portion of the side wall of the bowl and adapted for pivotal movement about an axis perpendicular to a plane containing said longitudinal axis and said duct, said second closure having a height which is less than that of said side wall opening whereby an necessary to support combustion of tobacco in said cavity may enter the same when said second closure is pivotally moved to a closed position.
