HOLDING CLIP CONSISTING OF A SPRING FOR CIGARETTES OR CIGARS Filed May 1, 1951 l atented deno l 1933.
KURT SGLT, G1 BEELIhl-STEGLITZ, GENE EQLDI'NG CLIP CONSISTING OF A SEEING B9B CKGABETT'EQ @lt CIGARS Application filed may 1,
This invention relates to a resilient holding clip for burning cigarettes or cigars, preterably to be mounted on ash-trays. The invention has for its object to prevent the dropping of glowing tobacco and to prevent the continuous burning of a cigarette or cigar before it can singe and set alight anything near the same when the cigarette or cigar is left alone.
Several embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which I Figs. 1 to 5 show a form of construction especially adapted for ash-trays fixed in metor cars.
Fig. l is a front elevation of the holding clip in the open position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the holding clip in the covered position, the interior :3 parts being indicated in dash lines in the position of rest.
Fig. 3 shows the inner part with the screw or stud for operating the clip.
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of Figs. 1 and 2.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing together with the holding clip the holding device :tor the ash-tray designed to hold this ash-tray with the clip fixed on the wall so F that it can be easily detached by being oscillated in the direction of the arrow.
Fig. 6 shows another form of construction, in which the holding clip is fixed on the ash-tray and remains permanently in the open position.
The holding clip consists of a resilient sheet metal band 6, preferably of lyre shape. An insert piece 0, having a cavity a in its upper edge, is inserted from above into the clip h and fixed on an ash-tray f in any suitable manner. The ash-tray 7 may be attached to a wall by means of a holding device g, which has at one end a strong flange h for carrying the ash-tray. The holding device 9 has on its upper flange end a blade spring h, which serves to securely press the ash-tray againstthe holding device and in such a manner that it can be 'easily removed from the holding device for cleaning in being tilted in the di- 59 rection of the arrow shown in F ig. 5. spring it prevents rattling of the ash-tray in the holder.
If the holding clip has to be used in motor cars, it is preferably covered, in order to avoid that persons entering into the car or getting out of the car tear their clothes on the tree edges 1) of the clip 6. With this object in view a sleeve i is provided covering the holding clip on the outer side and having two hinged lids d9 of suitable form. These hinged lids are automatically closed and opened by the free ends of the lyre-shaped spring I) and maintained in their open position by the insert in the spring 6, so that, it the holding clip is pulled upward in the sleeve, the lids 55 cannot be closed. ith this object in view stays Z are provided which,' when the holding clip is pushed up in the sleeve hold the lids in the open position and form at the same time holders for the cigar or cigarette. The w closing or the lids is efiected in that the free ends 6' of the clip 6 bear against the portions m of the hinged lids is and oscillate these lids around the :tulcrums a, so that they are slowly closed and securely held in the closed position, any rattling of the lids when the car is running being thus prevented. A blade spring 0, the free inwardly bent ends q of which bear against the walls p of the sleeve 2', serves to prevent the clip from easily sliding in the sleeve 11, as the ends 9 of the spring slide with high friction but elastically along the walls 37 of the sleeve. A screw or stud r in the insert body 0 facilitates the moving up and down of the clip. This screw r is 35 screwed into an internally threaded hole 8 of the insert piece 0 and projects through a slot 23 of the sleeve 2'; the length or this slot it determines the upward or downward movement of the holding clip.
The device can be easily taken to pieces. With this object in view it is merely necessary to unscrew the screw 1' and to depress from above the insert part c, at the same time pressmg together the ends Z) of the clip, so that the clip can be removed through the open lower end of the sleeve 2', in order to be cleared or interchanged.
The uncovered form shown in Fig. 6 is especially suitable for instance for restaurants, cafs or similar establishments To bring the clip shown in Fi s. 1 to '5 into tlfe position for use shown in ig. l, the screw or stud r is pushed from the lower end of the slot t to the upper end of the same, "whereby the hinged lids k are opened and the clip I) with the insert 0 raised above the upper edge of the sleeve ready to receive a cigar orcigarette. If the hoiding clip I) is no longer wanted, the screw is returned into the lower position shown in Fig. 2, so that' the insert piece with the clip Z) is pulled back into the sleeve 11 the lids 70 being automatically closed. 7
I claimz-- 1. A holding clip forcigars er cigarettes, comprising in combination a lyre-shaped spring, an insert lpiece in said spring having a cavity inthe top edge and a sleeve in which said spring with insert piece are slidably arranged.
2. A holding clip as specified in claim 1, comprisingin combination with the spring, the insert iece and the sleeve, hinged lids on the top en :of said'slceve to be automatically opened and closed? by the;ends 0f the said spring when said insert piece is moved up or down. 7 ,7
3. A holding clip as specified in claim 1, comprising in combination with the clip spring, the insert piece and the sleeve having a vertical guide slot in its front wall, hinged lids on the top end of said sleeve, a plate slidable in said sleeve on which plate said insert piece is fixed, vertical stays fixed on said plate to prevent the closing of said lids when the clip is pushed up out of said sleeve, said stays forming a support for the cigar or "cigarette. V 4. A holding clip as specified in claim 1,
comprising in combination with the clip spring, the insert plece and the sleeve having a vertical guide slot in its front wall, hinged lids on the top end of said sleeve, a plate slidable in said sleeve on which plate said insert piece is fixed, vertical stays fixed on said plate to prevent the closing of said lids I when the clip is pushed up out of said sleeve, said stays forming a support for the cigar oiscigarette, and a blade spring on said insert piece having twoiupwardly extending arms with inwardly curved ends bearing against the side walls of said sleeve.
5. A resilient holder clip for cigars and cigarettes, comprising in combination with an ash tray, a lyre-shaped spring, an insert piece in said spring, and a clip on sa-id insert piece adapted to detachably fix said insert piece on the edge of said ash tray.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
