Description

pfco 24, E935. I K. KANAI CIGARETTE CASE Filed Sept. 2'7, 1934 Patented Sept. 24, 1935 UNHTED STATES rse-tr tries 2 Claims.
This invention relates to cigarette cases and has for an important object thereof the provision of a dispensing case which is so constructed 7, that it may be mounted on any suitable support, 5 such as the edge of a card table, the dashboard of a motor vehicle, or any other suitable support.
Another object of this invention is to provide a combined cigarette case, match holder, and ash 7 tray structure which is so cons ructed that ciga- 10 rettes may be conveniently supported for use at the place desired and the ashes from the cigarette can be deposited in the ash receiver incorporated in the device. H A further object of this invention to prol5 vide a construction of this kind whereby the user can tell at a glance how many cigarettes are in the device without opening the case.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a dispensing case for cigarettes which 20 includes means whereby the cigarettes are so Withdrawn from the case that the cigarettes will be deposited in the hand of the person operating the dispensing means. In other words, the device is so constructed that it is only necessary 25 for a person to use one hand in the removal of cigarettes from the case and the operating means for removing the cigarettes is disposed on the same side from which the cigarettes are withdrawn rather than on the opposite side, as is the case 30 in many types of well known articles of this kind.
The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be described and in part be understood from the following detailed description of the preferred em- 35 bodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure l is a detail side elevation partly in section of a device constructed according to the preferred embodiment of this invention.
40 Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of-Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary top plan view of the 4.5 device.
Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals of reference designates corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral l designates generally a case of suitable length 50 and thickness so as to hold substantially an entire pack of cigarettes, with the cigarettes in side abutting relation. The container Ed has an inner side wall ll, an outer side wall I2, and a rear wall 13, which may be integral with the 55 two sides II and 12. A bottom wall I4 is secured at the two sides H and i2, and a top wall l5 closes the upper end of the container or case ill.
The container 45, along the front edge thereof and on each side, is provided with longitudinally n 7 extending grooves 16 in which a slide or closure '5 member i'z' engages. This slide or closure member H is provided with a longitudinally extending slot or opening i 8 and at the upper end thereof is provided with projecting portions iii in the form or" lugs or the like, providing means whereby 10 the closure or slide member ll may be readily moved uuwardly to refill the container Iii.
In order to provide a means whereby the cigarettes C, which are placed in the container It,
may be dispensed one at a time, I have provided a dispensing means including a plate member 29 having a depending arm or lug 2!. This arm or lug 2! projects through a longitudinally extending slot or opening 22, provided in the bottom [4, i and preferably, the rear wall !3 has an offset portion 23 at the lower end thereof in which the plate 20 seats when in inoperative position.
A depending lug 24 projects below the bottom l4 adjacent the front end thereof and a rod 25 is slidable through this lug 24 and has one end'25 thereof secured to the depending lug or arm 21. A knob or operating member 26 is fixed to the outer end of the rod 25 and provides a means whereby the rod 25 may be pulled forwardly against the tension of a spring 2'! disposed about the rod between the lug 24 and the depending portion N of the cigarette ejecting memebr 2c.
The closure H has an opening 23 therethrough through which the lowermost cigarette C is ejected and preferably the bottom It has an upwardly extending lip 29 which slightly raises the ejected cigarette and also constitutes a means whereby the lowermost cigarette will not readily slide out of the container I ll if the container be slightly tilted.
The case ll] may be detachably mounted on a suitable support either horizontal or vertical by a U-shaped clamp 30 having a screw threaded tightening member 3!. This clamp 30 has on the leg 32 thereof opposite from the tightening memher iii, a channel member 33 which frictionally engages an edge portion of the case Hi, and a second channel member 34 is secured to the bight 35 of the clamp. 30. Thechannel member 34 is similar to the member 33, but is disposed at right angles with respect thereto. A plate 36 is swivelled on the inner end of the screw 3| It will be apparent that the case l9 may be detachably mounted on either a vertical or a horizontal support. As shown in Figure 1, the case It) is secured to a horizontally disposed support 31.
The case I6 on the outer side thereof has a match receptacle 38 secured adjacent the lower portion of the outer side wall l2, and this match receptacle may be provided with a central partition 38 so that free matches may be placed therein and the matches held against tilting unduly. The outer side I2 of the case If] may also be provided with a serrated or roughened portion 40 on which the matches may be struck.
A substantially U-shaped strap or supporting member M is secured, as by rivets 42 or the like, to the match receptacle 38 and to the edges of the case H], and provides a support for an ash tray or receptacle 43 having a rib or turned over portion 45 on the upper portion thereof which prevents the match receptacle 43 from dropping through the looped support M. The ash tray 43 has an arcuate rest member 45 on one edge thereof so that a burning cigarette may be placed thereupon.
In the use and operation of the case hereinbefore described, the case l maybe detachably secured to a support, as at 3?, by means of clamp 38. The interior of the case ll! may be filled by pulling up the slidable wall member H and placing the cigarettes in the case It, transversely of the length of the case, with the cigarettes C in a horizontal position. Preferably, the cigarette case Ii] has a width only slightly greater than the thickness or diameter of a cigarette so that the cigarettes will gravitatingly move downwardly to the ejecting portion at the bottom thereof.
When it is desired to withdraw a cigarette from the case Ill, the knob or operating member 25 is pulled forwardly against the tension of the spring and modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of the above specifically described embodiment of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications being restricted only by the scope of the following claims.
I claim:-
1. A cigarette case as set forth, comprising a relatively thin container open along one edge thereof, guide means on opposite sides of the open edge, an elongated plate slidable in said grooves and having a longitudinally extending opening therethrough, laterally projecting lugs integral with the plate to facilitate withdrawal of the plate from the grooves, ejecting means in the lower portion of the container for ejecting cigarettes singly and means for detachably supporting the container in a vertical position.
2. A cigarette case, comprising a relatively thin container open along one edge thereof, a pair of guide grooves carried by the container on opposite sides of the open edge, an elongated plate slidable in said grooves and having an elongated longitudinally extending sight opening and a dispensing opening adjacent the lower end thereof. outwardly projecting lugs carried by the other end of said plate and extending beyond the sides of the container, ejecting means in the lower portion of the container for ejecting cigarettes through said dispensing opening, and means for detachably supporting the container in operative position.
