Description

March 19, 1935. v R 1,994,933
RECEPTACLE Filed May 28, 1934 John Ksser Patented Mar. 19, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE RECEPTACLE John Visser,
Grand Rapids, Mich., assignor to Grand Rapids Metalcraft Corporation, Grand Rapids, Mich., a corporation of Michigan The present invention relates to receptacles and more particularly to ash receivers especially adapted for use when installed within the interior of motor vehicles. a
The principal objects of the invention are to provide an ash receiver of the character above indicated, having a swingably mounted cover which may be tensionally retained in either open or closed position; to provide such a device whose cover tensioning-means forms a cigar or cigarette snuifer; and, to providesuch a device which is attractive in appearance, utilitarian in use and economical in manufacture.
An illustrative embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 isa front elevation view of the ,ash receiver showing the cover therefor in open position;
Figure 2 is a sectional view thereof on line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 isa top plan view of the ash receivershowing the cover in open position;
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary view, -pa rtly in section and partly broken away and showing in full lines the cover retained in open position and showing in dotted lines the cover in closedposition; and
Figure 5 is a sectional view on line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing inwhich like parts of the device shown are designated by the same numerals in the several views, the ash receiver or receptacle 1 is adapted to be detachably received within a container therefor, not shown,
' which container is adapted to be secured to the instrument panel or interior wall of a motor car, The front wall of the receptacle is preferably provided with a pair of spaced horizontally disposed slots 2, 3'best shown in Figures 1 and 2 and its upper marginal edge 4. is preferably rolled or turned over to form a beaded or-finished edge. A spring tensioned member 5 is secured within the spaced slots. 2,3 and is bent laterally immediately below the upper marginal edge 4 and extends rearwardly to the opposite edge and through the'notch 6 of the rear wall of the receptacl. This unsecured end' of the spring tensioned member thus floats at itsfree end and its medial portion ishere shown and preferably is provided with an apertured cupped portion '1 forming a, cigar or cigarette snuifer.
A cover 8 is swingably mounted uponthe rear edge of the receptacle by means of, thepintle 9,, passing through the curled lips 10, 11 integrallyformed upon the rearwall of the receptacle and the rear marginal edge of the 'cover respectively. This cover is preferably provided with a lateral- 1y extending portion 12 engaging the free or floating end of the spring tensioned member 5 for tensionally retaining the cover in either open 5 or closed positions, as best shown in Figure 4.
It will thus be seen that an ash receiver having a swingably mounted cover has been herein shown and described provided with tensioning V means for retaining the cover in either open or 10 closed position which tensioning means likewise forms a cigar or cigarette snuffer and that the device thus shown and described is attractive in a pearance, utilitarian in use and economical in manufacture.
While but one specific embodiment of this invention has been herein shown and described, it will be understood that numerous details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of thisdnven- 20 tion as defined by the following claims.
1. In a device of the class described, an ash receptacle whose front side is provided with a pair of spaced slots, a spring tensioned member secured within saidspacedslots and extending rearwardlytherefrom to the opposite edge thereof, said member being provided with an apertured cupped portionmedially thereof forming a snuifer, and a cover swingabl'y. mounted upon the rear edge of the receptacle having a laterally extending portion engaging the free end of said spring tensioned'memberfor tensionally retaining the cover in either open or closed positions.
2. In a device of the class describeQ an' ash receptacle, a. spring tensioned member secured adjacent the forward edge'of the receptacle and extending rearwardly therefrom toward the opposite edge th'ereof, said member being provided with a widened medial portion forming a snufler, 40
and a cover 'swlngably mounted upon the rear edge of the receptacle having a portion engaging the free end of said spring tensioned member for tensionally retaining the cover in either open or closed positions. f
3. In a device of the class described, an ash receptacle, a spring tensioned snuifer secured adjacent the forward edge of the receptacle and extending rearwardly therefrom toward' the op- I posite edge thereof, and acover swingably mounted upon the rearedge of the receptacle having a portion engaging the free end of the snuffer for,
tensionally retaining the cover in -either open or closed position.
