This invention relates to ash receptacles and particularly to an ash receptacle which is adapted for use in an automotive vehicle.

In prior art it is known to equip an ash tray or some part pertinent thereto with a snuffel',

and these snuffers have been somewhat troublesome in that they made no adequate disposition f the cigar or cigarette ashes which were deposited in the snuer. At times the objection-'- able ashes were allowed to fall in the car, over the seats, and soil the seat covers as well as the clothing of the passengers. In the present invention the snuier is placed on the cover on the I inside so that when thecigarette or the cigar is m snuied the ashes will be retained in the snuier, or allowed to fall into the receptacle. When the cover is closed, the snuffer part thereof will be substantially inverted and enable the ashes to fall into the receptacle. mi, On the drawing f Figure 1 is an inside view of the rear part of an automotive `vehicle showing the invention applied.

m On the drawing the numeral 2 indicates an automotive vehicle asa whole. The 'vehicle has the door 4, the door window 6, the i'loor il, the rear quarter window lli, the rear deck window l2, the rear deck I4, the vseat back It, the seat 45 bottom I 8, and thearm rest 20'. These parts are conventional and per se form no part 'of the invention.

The arm rest is provided with an opening in which the ash receptacle 22 of the invention is 50 positioned. The ash receptacle comprises the lower container 2li and the cover 26. In Figure 2,

The cover has the handle part 2B, by means o! which the cover may be raised, and also the ears t@ which project into the container 2t and are provided with trunnions 32 which project into the recesses 366 in the sides of the container 265. The trunnions have flats 365 and 33 which are adapted to be engaged by the sides of the iJ- 5 shaped springs tu. These springs will hold the cover in `either or its extreme positions, when the springs are in engagement with either of the ats. lo

The inside ci the cover Z6 is provided with the integral snuii'er ii. The snuer itself comprises an extension on the cover, the extension having the conical recess il@ which is adapted to receive either a cigar or cigarette to be snuied. In the go 4 position shown in Figure 2, the snuier is accessible, and after the cigar or cigarette has been snued, the ashes will be retained in the bottom of the recess it. When the cover is closed to the position shown in` Figure 3, the ashes will g5 fall from the recess into the container it due to the fact that the recess and the snufier are now in substantially inverted position. The corners oi the container 2t are provided with shoulders i9 to serve as abutments for the cover 2t in its 30 closedl position.

The cover 26' is of metal and has the ears til through which pass the rivets 5t to form a hinge for the cover. A suitable anti-squeak washer 52 is positioned between the earst and the inside w oi the receptacle 2t.

A snuer it' is of substantially the same shape as the snufer tl shown in Figure 2 and is provided with the recess 46 in which the end oi the cigarette or cigar may be snufled. The snuer is provided with the downturned outer reinforcing iiange 5t to strengthen the construction and at the side adjacent the cover 26' the iiange 5t is provided with an ear 5t which has an opening through which there passes the 50 screw 58, which is threaded into the handle t@ on the outside of the cover and retains the snuil'er in place.

InFigure 6 there is shown-the combination oi the metal container 2t' of Figure 4 and the su cover 2l" of Figure 2. 'I'he distinction between the cover in Figure 6 andthe cover in Figure 2 resides in the fact that there are no trunnions in Figure 6 corresponding to the trunnions 32 in Figures2 and 3. The ears 30" in Figure 6 have an opening through which there passes the rivet or pin 50' to hinge the cover. A bent-in part il is provided to limit the inward movement of the cover 26". l

In Figure 7 the cover 26" has, the handle 28 and a snuifer 44". The snuffer 44 is formed as an extension on the inside of the cover and has the recess 46". The recess is open at the side facing the receptacle when the cover is in closed position, and a slot 62 is provided therein. The l,slot 62 extends a little over halfway into the 'snuffer and the sides thereof are either tapered or rounded .with the wider part at the outside of the snuiier. The smoker4 may snuff the cigarette, either by placing it directly in the recess "Mor he may press the lighted cigarette end from the outside intothe slot, to cause the sides of the slot 62 to bite over the lighted end .to cause the ignited end to be snuffed.

1. In an ash receptacle for an automotive vehicle, a cover swingably connected, to the receptacle, a snuffer on the inside of the cover, said snuffer having a slot in its bottom to enable the 4insertion and snuing of a cigarette, said snuifer opening in a downward direction to discharge the ashes therefrom when the coverpis in closed position, and being in an upwardly 'directed position when the cover is open.

2. In an asl receptacle for automotive vehicles, a cover swingably connected to the receptacle, a snuffer on the inside of .the cover, said snufer having a slot withl diverging sides in its bottom to enable the insertion and snufllng of a cigarette, said snuter opening in a downward directionto discharge ashes therefrom when the cover is in closed position and being in an upwardly directed position when the cover is open.
