SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 778,374, dated December 27, 1904. Application filed May 28, 1903. Serial No. 159,221.

Be it known that we, J OSEFPRZEDEOKI and LUDWIG PRZEDEOKI, subjects of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Breslau, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarettes, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has reference to a new and improved cigarette with a; vegetable fibrous mouthpiece, preferably of unsplit straw. This straw mouthpiece is prepared and attached to the cigarette proper by means of special apparatus, for which an application for patent was filed by us on May 28, 1903, Serial N0.'159,220.
The new cigarette essentially consists of the cigarette properthat is to say, the tobaccofilled wrapperand of a mouthpiece of unsplit straw attached thereto. The straw is slit into a number of strips at one end, and for the purpose of preventing an extension of the slits beyond the intended length the slit-off strips are weakened at'the line of attachment and are then spread out angularly. The mouthpiece is then attached to the cigarettewrapper by means of special apparatus, as fully described in the copending application.
In order to make the invention more readily understood, We have illustrated it on the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure 1 of which representsa side elevation of the cigarette, and Fig. 2 a sectional elevation thereof.
Referring to the drawings, the letter a represents the tobacco-filled wrapper; b, the contracted end thereof.
0 is the straw, d the slitportions, and f the weakening bending-line.
The cigarette proper shows a contracted end portion. After the straw is slit at one end into a plurality of strips and is weakened'by being bent over in opposite directions in special apparatus the slit-off strips are bent outwardly at an angle, and the mouthpiece is then attached to the contracted cigarette portion, the spread-out strips insuring a firm hold on the tapering part thereof.
What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A cigarette, comprising the cigarette circling the said straw mouthpiece, a plurality of split strips bent outwardly at the said bending-line, the said split strips adapted to engage the said contracted end portion, substantially asspecified.
