UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
FREDERIO E. ARNOLD, OF ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN.
CIGAR.
srnornroarronrermin part (if Letters Patent No. 675,185, dated May 28, 1901'. Application filed January 3, 1901. Serial No, 41,972. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERIO E. ARNOLD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ann Arbor, in the county of Washtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Cigar, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved cigar arranged to prevent the ashes from falling off the cigar while smoking the same and at the same time keep all the flavors in the cigar and insure a free draft. a
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter andtlien pointed out in the claims. f
A practical embodiment of the-invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in" all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the i n1- provement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same. 7 Fig. bis aside elevation of a modified form of the improvement, parts being shown in section; and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of another modified form of the improvement,- parts being shown in side elevation.
The cigarA contains a support B for, hold ing the ashes A in position While smoking the cigar, so that the ashes do not drop on the floor, carpet, garments, or the like. The support B may be in the form of a filament, such as a rod or wire, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or
in the shape of a plurality of filaments B, 'as
indicated in Fig. 3, the support in either case extending longitudinally in the cigar and being preferably made of asbestos, nickel, German silver, or other suitablehon-combustible material.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the support Bis in the form of a rod or wire extending centrally in the cigar from the butt-end to within a short distance of the tip, so that when the cigar is smoked the ashes have a central sup port which prevents the ashes from falling off the end of the cigar, and consequently the fine aroma of the cigar is kept therein.
The support B (illustrated in Fig. 3) consists of three rods fastened together at the outer end and longitudinally arranged between the wrapper and the bunch to form a 1 basket which securely retains the ashes in po sition, and consequently the ashes are not liable to drop upon the fioor or carpet. In stead of rods fastened together a single wire B bentinto U -shaped form, as shown in Fig. 4:, may be used around the bunch instead of the filaments twisted together, as shown in Fig. 3.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Q 1. A cigar having a support for the ashes made of non-combustible material, the said support consisting of filaments extendinglongitudinally between the wrapper and the bunch at diflferent points, and connected at the butt-end of the cigar, as set forth.
2. A cigar having a support for the ashes, the said support consisting of a plurality of filaments united at the outer end or the buttend of the cigar and extending longitudinally between the wrapper and the bunch to form a basket, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERIO E. ARNOLD.
