Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STEPHEN S. WILCOX AND CHARLES F. CARE, OF ADEL, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CIGARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,310, dated September 28, 1875; application filed March 15, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we,S'rEPHEN S. WILOOX and CHARLES F. CARR, of Adel, Dallas county, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Head Attachments; and do hereby declare that-the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawing making a part of this specification, in which I Figure 1 is aperspective view of our im- 1 proved attachment separate from a cigar, and
Fig. 2 is a like view of the same as combined with a cigar.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
In the use of tobacco for smoking purposes it is well known that great objection is found to cigars by many in consequence of the, to them, unpleasant taste of the tobacco when brought into direct contact with the lips; and, further, with others, to whom the j taste is not. objectionable, the41iatention of I theend of a cigarwithin the mouth is open oanother objection, because of its liability obecome unwrapped and loosened by the mechanical action of the lips. Again, in the f manufacture of cigars the most difficult porgftion of the operation consists in finishing the smallvend, and manycigars afterward befcome worthless in consequence of the loosening of the Wrapper at such point. To obviate thes'e objections and produce a cigar whichmay be burned to its end without inconvenience to its user is the design of our invention, which consists, as a new article of 1. manufacture, in a cigar provided at its smaller end with an inclosing permanently-attached mouth-piece, substantially as and for the pur pose hereinafter specified. V
In the annexed drawing, A represents our mouth-piece constructed from metal or othersuitable material, and having exteriorly and interiorly the general form of the small orpointed end of a cigar. Exteriorly the mouthpiece A is concaved at opposite points, a and a, near its small end, for the purpose of enabling its user to hold it firmly in the mouth; and at said end is provided an opening, a, which passes longitudinally inward and furnishes a passage for smoke. The mouthpiece thus constructed is placed over and permanently secured to the small end of a cigar, B, by means of any suitable adhesive preparation, and becomes part of said cigar, to be sold with the same and thrown away after use.
In constructing cigars, by the use of our mouth-piece we avoid the necessity of pointing and finishing the small end, it being only necessary to make said end of such size as to permit it to enter said mouth-piece, where it is confined and prevented from becoming loosened and unwrapped. After wrapping, said end may be clipped in the same manner as the large end.
By use of our mouth-piece the tobacco of a cigar is prevented from coming into contact with the lips, and said tobacco can be burned much more closely than-in the ordinary manner, while its attachment to and use with cigars will not appreciably increase their cost.
Having thusfully set forth the nature and merits of our invention, what we claim is- As a new article of manufacture, a cigar, B, provided at its small end with an inclosing permanently attached mouth piece, A a a, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands this 5th day of March, 1875.
STEPHEN S. WILOOX.
CHARLES F. CARR.
