1 PIPE.
vSpecification. of Letters Patent. i
Patented May 28,1912.
' Application led lApril 27, 1911. Serial No.`623,718.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES ELKIN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State.
of-New York, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements m Pipes, of which the following is a specifica-` tion, reference being had therein tov the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to smokers pipes,-
and more particularly to the mouth-piece parts of the stems thereof, and has for its object to construct the end of the mouthvpiece in such a form as to deiectQthe smoke with a concave cavity with upwardly curving sides and outer end. Forward of said' cavity the mouth-piece part of the pipe stem is corrugated, above and below,.or provided `with a series of grooves which can be engaged by the` teeth of the smoker in holding the pipe in the mouth, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of one form of pipe stem embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof, and Fig. 3 a
cross section online 3 3, Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a side view of a pipe stem, of curved form, embodying somefeatures of the present invention.
Referring to the drawings, 12 denotes a pipe stem, which may be of any desired general shape, 'and which is formed at its mouth-piece end 'with a liattened or spatulate portion 13 preferably oval in crossl section, the said flattened or spatulate portion having a concave or cup-shaped open-topped recess 14 with upwardly curved edges 15 which will serve to deflect the smoke upward away `from the tongue and into the cavity of the mouth of the smoker. Forward of the open-topped concave recess 14 the mouthpiece is corrugated or provided with a series of grooves 15, above and below, for convenient engagement with the teeth of the smoker in holding the pipe in the mouth.
The {iat-tened mouth-piece portion 13 of the pipe stem may be formed integral with the stem, as shown in Fig. 4, which illustrates the invention as applied to a curved form of pipe stem, or it may be formed on a detachable plug part 16, as shown in Fig. 2. In such case the plug part 16 will preferably haven-'a tapering inner end and will have a comparatively small duct 17 through 1t, opening into a somewhat enlarged cham- .ber 18 in the body of the pipe stem, and, for
convenience in cleaning, the body portion of the stem 12 maybe provided at its smaller end with a removable plug 19. The duct 17 opens at one end into the bottom of the concave recess 14, and forms a communication between the said recess and the chamber 18 of the tubular stem 12. With this detachable-plug mouth-piece construction it will be apparent that any saliva which may pass through thev duct 17 will be trapped in the chamber 18, below the tapering inner end of the plug 19, and thereby be prevented from escaping outward through the mouth-piece.
This improved construction of pipe stem.
affords protection for the tongue of the smoker, -and also affords a convenient means whereb the pipe stem may beconveniently grippe by the teeth of the smoker, as-will be clearly apparent; and in the preferred form of the invention, with the detachable mouth-piece plug part 16, any saliva entering the mouth-piece and passing inward will be prevented from returning.
Having thus described my invention I claim and 'desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The herein described improvement in pipe stems, comprising a flattened spatulate mouth-piece part, oval in cross section and provided at its end with a broad, opentopped concave recess having upwardly curved edges, the said mouthl ieee having a central duct extending inwar from the bottom of said recess.
2. The herein described improvement in pipe stems; comprising a flattened spatulate mouth-piece part, oval in cross section and provided at its end with a broad, open? topped concave recess having upwardly curved edges, said mouth-piecelpart being formed on a plug portion detachably secured to the body of the pipe stem and having a central duct extending inward from the bottom of saidreoess, and the said plug a central duct extending inward fromihe` bottom of said recess, and the exterior of said mouth- 1ece being grooved or corrugated, both a ove and below, forward of said concave recess, to aforda proper hold for 15 the teeth of the smoker.
' In testimony whereof I aiix'my signature,
in presence of two witnesses.
- CHARLES ELKIN.
