UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
I NATHANIEL WATERBURY, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN MOLDS FOR FORMING BOXES FROM VENEERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 208,276, dated September 24, 1878 application filed July 23, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL WATER- BURY, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molds for Forming Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figurel is a front elevation of my improved mold for packing butter. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the line a; w of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a modification, showing several series of my devices, differently shaped, arranged between clamps; and Fig. 5 is a further modification, arranged in the form of a truncated cone.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by similar letters of reference.
The object of my invention is to produce a mold or molds for forming boxes uniformly of any shaped desired; and it consists of one or more molds, which I particularly design for use in packing butter-boxes, the molds to be made in two or more sections, and having at some point on the inner circumference an offset to receive the outer end of a veneer where the two ends are lapped and secured together, all as hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the annexed drawing, A refers to my improved hollowbarrel-shaped mold, its inner diameter being the same throughout, except as to the offset, described hereinafter, composed preferably of two half-sections, B B, which are held together by means of hoops or clamps O G, as the case may be, encircling the mold near each end. An offset, D, is chamfered on the inner surface at one edge of one of the sections, B, the purpose of which is to receive the outer or lapped end of the sawed circular veneer bands E, which are placed in the mold A. By this construction the edges of the bands are brought into alignment, and their outer surfaces touch the inner surfaces of the mold at every point.
The shape of the mold A can be varied considerably without departing from the spirit of my invention, as partly indicated in Figs. 4 and 5, the former of which represents the manner in which I arrange several series of molds for holding hands or boxes of circular, oblong, square, and other shapes, the sections B of which are held together by clamps F F, or other suitable means. Instead of being in one piece, as shown in Fig. 4, the middle sections can be divided, as represented by the dotted lines.
The offset can be formed at any point of the inner circumference of the mold A.
The sections or parts B B can be hinged together, if preferred.
After the bands E are steamed, or otherwise suitably prepared, they are placed in the sections B, with the outer or lapped ends of the former resting in the offset D,'when the said sections B are held or clamped together by the hoops C, after which butter is forced into the boxes, when the mold is removed and the said boxes are ready to be prepared for shipment.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A mold for forming packing rings or boxes constructed in sections, and having an offset in its inner wall for the overlapping ends of said rings or boxes, substantially as shown and described. V
2. The combination of the sections B, having an offset, D, with the hoops (J and the rings or boxes E, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
NATHANIEL WVATERBURY.
Witnesses:
I. P. BERTHRONG, JAMES H. LANGE.
