@Howlett JOHN SCHBAMM, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led December 28, 1909. Serial No. 535,235.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, JoHN SCHRAMM, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and Auseful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys, and has for an object to provide an interesting article of this character wherein is employed a propeller which may bel rotated suiiiciently to cause the action of its vanes or blades against the 'air to rise to a considerable extent into the air.
In thedrawings, forming a portion of this specification and in .which like numerals of reference indicate similar arts in the several vie'ws z-Figure 1 is a ragmentary perspective view of my improved toy. Fig. 2 1s a detail horizontal sectlon through the propeller-carrying shaft showing the manner of securing the propeller thereon. Fig. 3 is a detail section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the disk.
My improved toy consists of -a propeller l which comprises a plurality of transversely disposed members 2 whose central portions are reduced and whose end portions are enlarged to form radial vanes or blades 3. The central reduced portions 2 are apertured for the reception of the u'pper ends of a dependin hollow shaft 4, the said shaft being provi ed with a fixed supporting disk 5 against which the intermediate portions of the members 2 are seated. The shaft 4 is provided with a companion disk 6 which is arranged in parallel relation with the disk 5. The outer end of the shaft 4 is upset or headed as shown at 7 for engagement with the disk 6. The stop shoulders 5 form transverse grooves 6 for the intermediate portions f the said vanes. This construction securely contines the members 2 between the disks 5 and 6 as will be appreciated and holds them against any possib e rotation past their point o adjustment.
An elongated cylindrical su port 8 is adapted to receive the hollow s aft 4, the latter bein adapted for rotation on the former as wil be presently described. The support 8 is provided at one end with a handle 9 whose outer end is formed to provide a seat 10 against which the inner end of the shaft 4 may abut, the said seat thus serving the purpose of a stop for limiting the sliding movement of the shaft 4 on the support 8 in one direction.
In operation of ,the herein described toy the handle 9 is held in one hand of the operator and the hollow shaft 4 is then opera-v tively mounted on the support 8, after which Patented Nov. 8, 1910.`
the flexible connection 11 1s wound about the shaft 4 and its free end may be pulled outwardly by the other hand of the operator to rotate the shaft 4 on the support.
It will be seen that the propeller can be rotated with considerable s eed on the support '8 and after the flexib e connection has een disengaged from the shaft the action of the blades 3 against the air will be suiicient to cause the propeller to rise to a considerable extent as will be understood.
A toy constructed on lines herein set forth and described will be found very amusing and incident to its simplified construction it may be placed on the market at a minimum cost.
It will be seen that by providing a support of the nature disclosed it may be inserted in the hollow shaft to extend approximately throughout the entire length thereof so that the said shaft can be accurately revolved and the propeller guided in the de sired direction.
I claim:
As a new article of manufacture, a toy embodying a hollow shaft, transversely disposed vanes at one end of the shaft, disks secured to the shaft and arranged in clamping engagement with the intermediate ortions of the said vanes, one of the said dlsks being formed to provide spaced stop shoulders to 'hold the said vanes in fixed osition, and a support receiving and upon w ich the said shaft is rotatably and slidably mounted.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN scusami.
