FRANK PAOLO GIANNANDREA, or TOTTENVILLE, NEW YORK.
' MUSICAL TOY.
-. Application filed november'iz, 1915. Seria1i\To.61 ,199.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK PAOLO GIAN a fan disposed in advance of a sounding member and adapted. to be rotated by a blast of air blown throughthe horn to cause the musical sound produced by the sounding member to be prolonged after the blast of air has been discontinued. v 1 I A still further object of the invention is to provide means which normally assists in maintaining the rotation of the fan after the blast of air "through the horn has been dis continued and which, will enable the fan to p be rotated when the toy is held against the wind- WVith these and other objects in view, the
invention consists. in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts Wh1Cl1 will be hereinafter described and pointed outin the appended claims.
The preferred embodiment of the inventionlias been illustrated in the accompanying drawing, although no. restriction is necessarily made to the precise details of construction therein shown, as changes, alterations and'modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when so de-v sired.
. vention.
Like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a musical toy constructed in accordance with the in- Fig. 2 is a verticallongitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Referring to the drawing in detail,v the numeral 1 designates the device as a Whole which comprlses a horn 2, having a fan casing disposed between the ends thereofand communicating with the interior of the horn, said fan casing 3 having a rotatable fan 4 located therein, and propellers 5 10- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented line 27, 1916.
cated at opposite sides of the fan casing and rotatable with the fan 4. JThe fan casing 3 which is cylindrical in shape has extending transversely therethroughand projecting beyond the side walls 6 thereof, a shaft 7. The peripheral wall 8 of said fan casing is govlded With spaced apertures 9 and'10.
xtending radially from theperipheral surface 8 of the fan casing 3 is a tube 11 one end of which is disposed in the aperture 10 while the remaining end thereof is fla ed as indicated by the numeral 12. Frictionally maintained in the tube 11 adj acent the aperture 10=in the fan casing is a strip of material 13, the 'opposite ends of which are bent and rounded'to contact with the inner wall of the tube 11 While the intermediate portion .of the strip 13 is shaped to,produce a whistling sound when a blast of air'is passed through apertures 15 therein, Extending tangentially from the peripheral wall 8 of the fancasing 3 is a tube 16, one end of which is secured in the opening'9 While the remaining end of the tube is provided with a mouth piece 17 said tubes 16 ,and 11 oooperating to provide the horn portion ofthe device. The fan 4 which is disposed within the fan casing 3 and fixed to the shaft 7 has the blades thereof bent in such a manner that when a blast of air is directed into the fan 'casing 3, through the tubelfi, the fan will be caused to rotate rapidly or slowly according to thevelocity at wliich passes through the fan casing. 5 It will of course be understood that when the wind the fan is rotated,- the propellers will also-v rotate and act similar to a fly wheel on a shaft and in this manner enable the-fan to continue to rotate for a short time after the blast of air directed through the-tube 16 has been discontinued. Thus it wilf be seen that When the fan is rapidly rotate either by air directed through the tube 16 .or by the wind contacting with the propellers 5, the pitch of the tone produced by the air directed through the sounding member 15 of the fan will be regulated bythe rapidity at which the fan revolves.
From theforegoing statement it will'be at once apparent that a musical toyhas been provided which will afford considerable-amusement to children and also require a certain amount of skill to produce a con-, tinuedtone simulating a tune.
To prevent lateral movement of theshaft 7 ,in the side walls of the fan casing and to fan casing disposed between the endsenable the friction occasioned by the rotation of the shaft to be reduced toa mini- .mum the shaft 7 has secured thereto near each end thereof a ball 19 which contacts with theside walls 6 of the fan casing 3.
From the, foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that, a musical toy has been provided which may be operated in a man- 'ner similar to that used in blowing a horn and also that a toy has been provided which is simplein construction, and inexpensive of manufacture.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A musical toy comprising a horn, a
thereof and having communication with the interior of the horn, a shaft extending through said fan casing at right angles to the horn, a fan disposed within the fan casing and fixed to the shaft, a sounding vmember located in the horn and near said,
fan, and propellers fixed to said shaft exteriorly of the fan casing.
2. 'A' musical toy comprising a horn, a movable sounding member disposed within the horn, a fan casing having communication with the interior of the horn adjacent the sounding member, a shaft loosely mounted in the side walls of the fan casing, means contacting with the side walls of the fan casing to prevent lateral movement of the shaft, a fan fixed to the shaft and having the blades thereof disposed in the path of a blast of air directed through the horn, and a propeller on each end of the shaft exteriorly of the fan casing.
blast of air directed through the horn and fan casing to cause said propellers to revolve, and a sounding member disposed adjacent the path of movement of vthe 'blades of said fan to receive the air therefrom In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
