Be it known that I, FRANK J. KRIsTornK, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Pauh'in the county of Ramsey and State ofMinnesota, have invented a new and usefullmprovement in Tops, of which the fol lowing is a specification. i
My invention relates to spinning tops and the primary object is in providing a device which is of simple construction and inexpensive to manufacture.
A further object is in providing a spinning top with a center peg which is of material soft enough to beabraded by ordinary stamping burs.
it. is also an object to provide burs on the body and other portions of the top which will abrade the axial peg of the same when the portions of the top are assembled so as to hold them rigidly to. the peg without additional operation.
It is an object to have a top with a flat thin circular body portion and a separate support which is adapted to give a long bearing surface on the peg on the top so as to prevent the peg from becoming loose or movingtransversely under ordinary use.
A further object is in providing a top with a non-metallic upper surface which can be used for a display surface or any other desired object. I

The lower end of the peg l is pointed so-as to form a pointed surface 2 which rests on the surface on which the top is spun, thereby makinga small frictional contact.
The top A is formed with a circular body portion 3 which is formed out of thin sheet material and has a central depending flange t formed when a hole 16 is made in the body portion and having ragged peg engaging burs on its lower edge. The outer circumference of the bod'y'portion 3 isturned inward so as to form a circumferential engagingfiange 6 which is adapted to engage the surface of'the disk 7 to hold it securely against the upper surface S of the body por tion 3. f

The body portion 3'is positioned closer to the pointed end of the peg 1 than to the top or engaging end of the peg 14, so that when it is desired to spin the top, the portion 14: is engaged between the fingers and given a quick twist. The circular portion giving suflicient momentum to spin the top for a considerable length of time.
The circumferential flange 6 tends to increase the weight around the circumference of the body portion 3, thus assisting the momentum of the top. The top A is so formed as to perfectly balance itself when spinning and the disk portion 7 which is preferably of a non-metallic material gives an upper surface on wh1ch any suitable d splay I matter can be illustrated. Itis obvious that the burs 5 and 11 can be bent inward after the body portion 3 and the support 9 have been forced in place on the peg 1, to insure rigidly holding the peg 1 to the body portion of the top. The top is of simple construction, easily assembled andinexpensive to manufacture.
In the-construction illustrated in Fig. 6, the body portion 3 of the top A,'is formed of cardboard or a non-metallic substance and is held to the peg l by means of two sup ports 9 which are forced on to the peg 1. The supports or braces 9 are of the same construction as illustrated in Fig. 3 and are adaptedto impinge against either side of the surface of the body so as to hold the body portion 3 rigidly'in relation to the peg l. Washers 18' aresecured'in any suitable manner to the outer edge 19 of the nonmetallic body 3 andare adapted to protect the edge of the same and also increasing the weight around the circumference of the body 3 so as to increase the momentum of the top when spinning.
By forming the top with a non-metallic body portion 3, very little metal is used in the construction of the same and the hollow supports 9 sufficiently hold and brace the peg and body portion so as to give a good substantial construction. If it is desired,
