Patented July 22,1873.
\N mm) as [7 jg UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
JOHN SPENCER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPINNING-TOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,089, dated July 22, 1873 application filed April 16, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN SPENCER, of Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Top; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of a top embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in both figures of the drawing.
My invention relates to that class of tops used as toys for children; and has for its object to provide a series of tops so arranged as to be spun or turned by one operation and to that end it consists in providing the upper portion or body of the top with a conical cavity or receptacle, W, within which is loosely fitted a series of hollow cones, each so arranged as to alternately fit one within the other; and as the top is turned upon its center the cones are thrown one from the other andfrom the receptacle by the centrifugal motion of the top, thereby causing each cone to revolve on its center.
In the drawings, A represents the top proper, which is made of hard wood and in the form shown, the base being elongated, forming a spindle, A, around which the cord is wound for turning the same in the usual manner. The upper portion or body of the top is made hollow, forming a conical receptacle, W, as shown in Fig. 2. Within this receptacle W is loosely fitted a series of cones, a, b, 0, d, e, and f, each (except the first, marked a) provided with a conical cavity or hollow adapted to receive the adjacent next smaller cone. These cones are each provided with a metal pivot or center, h, shown in Fig. 2, forming center on which the same is supported when in motion.
In turning or spinning my top the cord is wound around the spindle A in the usual manner, and as it is made to turn a like motion is imparted to the cones jointly with the, top, and by the centrifugal motion the cones are thrown one from the other and from the) receptacle W, each falling to the floor and revolving on its center.
Having thus described my invention, I claim The spinning-top A, provided with a conical receptacle, W, and the nest of cones a, b, 0, 61,6, and f, which cones are expelled from the top, separated, and made to turn independently of each other by the centrifugal motion imparted to the top, all said parts be.- ing constructed and'arranged to operate substantially as specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 10th day of December, A.
. JOHN SPENCER.
