TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 2? 1916.
Application filed February 13, 1914. SeriaI'NO. 818,563.-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, WVILLIAM N. CnAw, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Norwalk, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys; and it has for its object the provision of a device of this character which, when in operation, will furnish considerable amusement for young children; one which will consist'of a substantially wheel-like body mounted to rotate on a vertical pedestal and provided at such points with seats in which small dolls or like figures may be mounted and arranged so that their weight will be distributed so as to cause the wheel to take wave-like motions during its progress of revolving, and further, the provision of a toy of this character in which the principal parts thereof can be quickly separated from each other and arranged in a comparatively compact package for shipment or storage.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of the toy with parts in section; Fig. 2 is an inverted perspective view of a portion of the wheel and one of the seats; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section on an enlarged scale through the supporting pedestal and through the bearing end of the wheel.
The toy consists of a support which includes a vertical pedestal 1 having its lower end ,removably fitted'in the socket 2 of a block 3, the latter being provided with a plurality of downwardly and outwardly extended feet .4, which are adapted to sustain the weight of the superstructure of the toy to be hereinafter described. At the upper end, the pedestal 1 is provided with a cup portion or concave 5, into which a corresponding portion 6 of a metallic cup 7 is mounted. The revolving wheel 8 consists of a main wire 9 bent in circular form, a central hub or disk 10 having a manipulating knob 11 and'a depending centrally-located substantially conical bearing 12, the point of which being adapted to rest in the concavity 6 of the cup 7, so that the wheel may be freely revolved when the knob of which is twisted as in the manner of spinning a top by manipulating the fingers of the hand. The wheel is completed by radial wire spokes having main horizontal connecting portions 14, whose inner ends are soldered or otherwise suitably secured in radial upstruck portions 15 of the disk 10. The outer ends of the connecting portions let are extending through horizontal passages 16 formed in the ring 9. From these points the spokes are extended downwardly at 17 for a suitable distance below the ring and they are then extended ina horizontal direction as at 18 and then in an upward direction at 19 and the free ends of the portions 19 are hooked, as at 20over the main connecting portion14. The portions 17, 18 and 19 ofeach of the said spokes define a seat frame, and on the portion 18 is soldered or otherwise suitably secured a metallic or other suitable form of seat 21, in which a doll 22 or other suitable figure may be mounted and V then secured against falling under the centrifugal action of the wheel, by means of a rubber band or like securing element 23 which may be extended around the back of the seat and over the front of the doll and against the portions 17 and 19, as illustrated.
The seats of the toy are approximately equidistantly located around the wheel and under the weight of thedolls or other figures it will be readily understood that when the wheel is revolved it will tend to take amusing up and down or wave-like move. ments.
I claim The herein described toy comprising a supporting base having a pedestal provided with a cupv at itsupper end, and a wheel comprising a hub disk having a spinning knob on its upper side and a spinning point on its lower side at the center to bear in said cup, a circular rim Wire concentric with the spokes forming seat frames and object the hub disk and radial Wire spokes having carrying seats mounted in said frames. 10 their inner ends attached to the hub disk, In testimony whereof I affix my signasaid Wire spokes passing through openings ture in presence of tWo Witnesses.
in the rim Wire and each having its outer WILLIAM N. CRAJV.
end bent downwardly, inwardly and then l/Vitnesses:
upwardly and formed With a hook engaged CRAMER O. HEGEMAN,
over its radial portion, said bent portions of DONALD POWELL.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. 0.
