Description

W. CAMPBELL ROPE CLAMP.
APPLICATION FILED 00119, 1911.
Patented Oct, 29, 1912.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM CAMPBELL, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
ROPE-CLAMP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Rope-Clamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in rope clamps.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a rope clamp in which tWo relatively rotatable elements are mounted one within the other for clamping a rope therebetween.
Another object of the invention is to provide a rope clamp of the character described which is capable of automatically gripping a rope and which can be readily released from the rope when so desired.
A further object of the invention is to provide a rope clamp of the character described which is composed of a minimum number of parts, is therefore simple in construction, and cheap to manufacture.
lVit-h these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of a rope clamp constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the outer element, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the inner element, and Fig. 4: is a transverse sectional view taken through the clamp showing the rope in its clamped posit-ion.
Like reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, the invention comprises two relatively movable outer and inner elements A and B respectively. The outer element A is preferably formed from a single casting of metal and comprises a Specification of Letters Patent.

pair of spaced flat rings 55 which are disposed in registration, and which are connected by a longitudinally disposed bar 6. The thickness of this bar is somewhat greater than the thickness of either ring 5, and has a flat inner face 7. This bar is furthermore preferably arranged on the rear side of the element. The rings 5-5 are centrally connected at their tops by a radially extending bridge 8 which is centrally formed on its underface with a concaved cut-away portion 9 forming a consequent central reduced portion 10 adapted to be engaged by a supporting hook 11 of any suitable construction. It will be observed in this connection that the bridge 8 not only secures the rings 55 against movement, but also constitutes a finger-piece adapted for a purpose hereinafter described.
The inner element B constitutes a solid cylindrical cast body adapted to snugly fit within the rings 5 of the outer element 13. A transverse groove 12 is centrally formed within the outer face thereof and includes a flat portion 13 forming resultant corners 14 14. This slot is adapted to register with the bar 6 of the outer element, and in order to rotate said inner element there is provided at one end. thereof a finger-piece 15 which extends beyond the outer edge of the adjacent ring 5.
In practice, the rope 16 to be clamped is inserted through the cut-away portion 9 of the bridge 8 and thence downwardly through the transverse groove 12 of the inner member, as will be readily seen by reference to Fig. 4 of the drawing. As a result, when a pull is exerted upon the upper end of the rope 16, the said rope will be pinched between the lower corner 14 of the recess 12 and the inner face 7 of the bar 6 and thereby held against movement. When it is desired to release the rope the finger piece 15 is moved away from the bridgepiece 8 as will be readily understood.
It is to be observed that the inner member B can be readily slid into or out of the rings 5 of the outer member A, and that the rope when it is disposed in its operative position will prevent the inner member B from shifting longitudinally of the outer member.
hat is claimed is:
1. A rope clamp comprising in combination, an outer member consisting of a pair of spaced rings disposed in registration and connected by a longitudinally disposed bearing, and an inner cylindrical member detachably mounted for rotation Within the rings of the outer member and formed With a transverse groove Which in one position of the inner member is adapted to co-act with the longitudinal bar of the outer member to form a rope clamp.
2. A rope clamp comprising in combination, an outer member formed from a single casting consisting of a pair of spaced fiat rings disposed in registration, a longitudinally disposed bar connecting said rings and having a fiat inner face, a radially extending bridge element projecting outwardly from and connecting said rings and disposed in spaced relation to the bar, said bridge being centrally formed on its underface With a concaved cut away portion, and an inner cylindrical member detachably mounted for rotation Within the rings of the outer member and formed With a transverse groove Which in one position of the inner member is adapted to co-act With the longitudinal bar of the outer member to form a rope clamp.
In testimony whereof, I atliX my signature, in presence of tWo Witnesses.
WILLIAM CAMPBELL.
