Description
J. B. JAMES. GOLLAPSI-BLE STAND FOR LIFTING BARRELS, BOXES, AND THE LIKE. APPLIOATION FILED 13110.24, 19 09.

SE PATENT JOHN BRADFORD JAMES, 0F ELY, ENGLAND.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 24., 1908.
Patented Oct. 18, 1910. Serial No. 469,142.
T 0 all whom it may concern? Be it known that I, JOHN BRADFORD JAMES, a subject of the King of Great Britain, resident at Ely, in the county of Cambridge, England, have invented a C01- lapsible Stand for Lifting Barrels, Boxes, and the Like.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in stands for barrels, boxes, and the like, and has for its object to provide a stand for such articles that may be packed or stored in a small compass when not required for use and which is capable of being very readily and easily affixed in position upon the barrel, box, or other like article, and by which such barrel, box, or other article is quickly lifted from the ground or floor and held in a firm and secure position.
WVith this object in view the invention consists essentially of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a barrel supported in a stand constructed in accordance with this invention; Fig. 2 is an elevational view of one of the face pieces, two of which are made use of to form the stand; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the stand and barrel before the barrel is lifted into an upright position.
a and b are two face pieces which form the stand proper, made of wood or other suitable material and provided with holes of a convenient shape to receive the ends of the article to be lifted and supported by the stand. The material around the holes (see particularly Fig. 2) is cut or molded in such manner that it forms a rim which is round on the top, swells out toward the bottom and is drawn in again and curved or hollowed out at the bottom to form the two feet 72, 71,
In the middle of the top and bottom of the face piece a two hooks e and f are fixed, to which the chains 0 and (Z (attached at one end at c f respectively to the middle of the top and bottom of the face piece 6) are hooked.
In operation, the barrel to be lifted and put in its place for use is rolled along the floor or ground to the desired place and the two face pieces a and b are pushed over the ends of the barrel and the two chains 0 and d are hooked upon the hooks e and f on the face piece a in such manner that the two face pieces a and b are drawn tight together. In placing the face pieces on the barrel it must be observed that the thinner round part is placed underneath the barrel and the two feet uppermost, see particularly Fig. 3. After this the barrel with the stand attached is easily rocked on to the feet of the latter and a firm position of the barrel is then secured.
What I claim is A collapsible support for barrels or the like, comprising two spaced face pieces adapted to fit over the ends of a barrel, the upper half of the face pieces being circular in outline, the lower half having a cutout portion forming two supporting feet, and chains connecting the face pieces substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this application in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN BRADFORD JAMES.
Witnesses:
