CH RlSTMAS-TREE SUPPORT.
srncrrrcn'rroiv forming part of Letters Patent No. 685,049, dated was 22, 1901.
Ap nasa filed rm 10,1901. Serial No. 63,849. (to model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. KERR, a citizen of the United States, residing at 171 Hamilton avenue, city of Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Christmas-Tree Supports, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to Christmas=tree holders or supports; and it consists of a cylindrical barrel portion in which the tree stands, a circular base much greater in circumference than the barrel portion, and adjustable legs adapted to lock the barrel portion and base together, substantially as hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and pointed out in the claim.
The objects of my invention are, first, to provide a cheap and durable Ghristmas-tree support; second, to provide a support for Christmas trees that may be put together and taken apart with facility and that may be stored away without taking up much room; third, to reduce the liability of Christmas trees to topple over, and, fourth, to provide a support which will accommodate almost any tree of the various sizes used for the purposes described. I attain these objects by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side View, parts being locked together and in position to receive a Christmas tree. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view with the cylindrical barrel portion removed therefrom. Fig. 3 is a section of the base on the line X X in Fig. 2, showing the holding-groove in which the foot of the leg dovetails or looks; and Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view through the barrel portion, showingit conical in shape with a tapering bore and thumb screws.
Referring to the drawings, the ring or base A rests fiat upon the floor and being a great deal larger in circumference than the barrel portion B forms a broad base and with the weight of the tree in the barrel affords a firm support for the tree which is not easily upset.
The upper face of the ring base A may be fiat or of any shape, ornamental or otherwise, as desired, and is provided with holding slots or sockets a, into which the feet 0 of the legs 0 dovetail as far as the shoulders 0" will permit.
The upper portion of the legs Care pro vided each with a segmental collar 0 which are adapted to fit around the vertical portionof the barrel B under the projecting collar or shoulder 17, which is formed on the barrel B.
The barrel B may be formed either with the outer face of the same circumference from top to bottom, or it may be formed tapering toward the bottom, as indicated by b, and the bore of the barrel may also be formed straight or taperin be closed or open. v
I do not wish to limit myself to any particular size or configuration of the barrel.
The barrel may be internally threaded without departing from the scope of my invention.
The tree when placed in the barrel may be The bottom'of the barrel maysecured therein by means of spikes or screws weight of the tree or the center of gravity be-,
ing directly through the center and the annular shoulder of the barrel resting upon the segmental collars on the upper portion of the legs firmly interlocks the barrel, legs, and base.
With this description of my invention, what- I claim is As a new article of manufacture, a Christmas-tree support consisting of a barrel portion, in combination with a broad base, and legs, the whole adapted to be interlocked and held together, or taken apart, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN F. KERR.
