Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, GEORGE L. RoPPE- NEKER and ALBERT L. SCOTT, citizens of the United States, residing at Franklin, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Porch Flower-Brackets, of

which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in flower baskets for porches, the primary object of the invention being to provide a basket which may be easily and quickly positioned upon a pillar of a porch and which may be readily removed therefrom when desired.

Another object of the invention is to provide a split sleeve having means whereby the said sleeve may be secured to porch pillars of various diameters and whereby the said sleeve will efiectively support, but at the same time, permit of a rotatable movement of, a flower basket or box.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of flower boxes or baskets which comprise a pair of sections having means whereby the said sections may be effectively connected together and sustained upon the collar which is positioned upon the base or pillar of the porch.

With the above, and other objects in view, which will appear as the nature of the invention progresses, the improvement resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, there has been illustrated a simple and preferred embodiment of the improvement, and in which drawings- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement showing the same positioned upon a porch post, or pillar. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the improvement. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the same, the post he ing shown in section. Fig. 4 is a plan view showing the sectional box spread. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the supporting sleeve. Fig. 6 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken along the line of the slit in the box. Figs. 7 and 8 are detail vertical and horizontal sectional views respectively of the ball bearingarrangement.

In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 designates a post or pillar which is designed to support a porch. It is to be here stated that the device is not to be understood as applicable to only porch pillars or supports, as the same may be at tached to trees, posts, or other supports, as desired. The improvement contemplates the employment of a split sleeve which is designated by the numeral 2. The sleeve 2 may have its inner face of a construction conforming with the shape of the post 1, but the outer face thereof is preferably rounded. In the devices illustrated in the drawing, the sleeve 2 comprises a cylindrical member having its lower meeting edges formed with off-set ears 3, and the said ears being provided with openings through which a threaded member 4 projects and has its extending portion engaged by a nut 5. The

upper portions of the sleeve 2 adjacent the slitted edges thereof may be also formed with openings 6, these openings serving for the reception of additional securing elements such as screws or the like. The sleeve 2 is constructed of some hardened resilient material, and the said sleeve is slitted at intervals adjacent its lower end and the metal between the slits is bent upwardly to provide off-set supporting elements 7 for the flower box or basket which will presently be described. If desired, and in some instances it has been found preferable, the upper edge of the off-set 7 may be inturned to provide a race way for anti-frictional balls 8.

The numeral 9 designates the sectional box or basket which is adapted to be sustained upon the post by the sleeve 2. This box or basket may be constructed in any desired or preferred manner, the device shown in the drawings having its face 10circumferential and its edges formed with an angular upstanding flange 11. If desired, the flange 11 may comprise a pair of sections hingedly connected together but in most instances this has been deemed unnecessary and adds to the expense of the device, as the flange is required to be only opened a short distance to allow the box or basket to be positioned around the post.

One of the edges of the flange, adjacent its slitted portion is provided with a socket 15, while the opposite end of the said flange is provided with a pivoted catch 16, which has its off-set end engaging within the socket 15 when the box is in its set up position around the post 1. Secured to the lower face of the base 10, and surrounding acentral opening provided within the sections forming the said base is a downwardly extending collar 17. This collar 17 is slitted in a line with the slit which divides the

18 and 19. flanges are each formedwith alining openings, and the said openings are adapted for the reception of removable adjusting elements, such as bolts and nuts. The collar is further provided, adjacent its lower extremity, with a plurality of openings, and these openings may receive securing elements when it is desired to sustain the box or basket 9 immovably upon the post. The portion of the collar 17 adjacent the base 10 is formed with a plurality of outturned fingers 20, and each of these fingers is provided with securing elements whereby the collar is sustained upon the base 10. The securing elements, connecting the collar with the section 12 of the base are removable, the same being secured to the said section 12 through the medium of bolts and nuts, and whereby the said collar may be sprung to engage around the post 1. The collar 17 is further connected with the

12 and 13 of the base through the medium of a plurality of inclined legs 21. The leg members 21 adjacent the dividing slit which separates the sect-ions 11 and 12, are provided with enlarged ends, whereby one portion of the said leg members may be rigidly secured to the section 13 and whereby the opposite side of the leg member may be provided with openings which receive suitable nuts and bolts or other removable sustaining elements.

From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be readily noted that the box or basket 9, as well as its collar 17, may be spread so as to pass over the post 1 and to have the said collar engage with the anti-frictional balls provided upon the off-set supports 7 of the sleeve 2. It will be further noted that-by returning the nuts and bolts to their initial position'upon the sections of the collars and by swinging the catch 16 into engagement with the socket 15 the box or basket is eifectively sustained upon the said post.

In some instances it has been found desirable to provide the box or basket 9 with an inner annular flange 22. This flange 22 comprises a slitted member having its lower end formed with off-set feet 23, the said feet being movably connected with the

12 and 18 of the base 10. The annular flange 22 is adapted to project a suitable distance above the base 10 to protect the post from the dirt, or moisture from within the box. One of the slitted ends of the annular flange 22 is formed with a pivoted hook 24., while the opposite flange is formed with a socket 25, which is adapted to receive the said hook, and whereby the ends of the slitted flange are sustained.

Having thus fully described the said in vention, what we claim is 1. The combination with a post or support and a sleeve surrounding the post, of a flower box adapted to be supported by the sleeve, said flower box comprising a flanged member having its base slitted and its flange on one of its sides being also slitted in a plane with the slitted base, one of the edges of the flange being provided with a projecting hook, the edge of the second member of the flange having an eye adapted to receive the hook, substantially as described.

2. The combination with a post having a sleeve provided with off-set supports, of a flower box comprising a flanged member having its base slitted and its flange at one side thereof also slitted, the central portion of the base being provided with a cylindrical opening, a sectional collar extending below the base and rigidly connected with one of the sections provided by the slitted base, means for securing the slitted edges of the box together, and means for securing the slitted edges of the collar whereby the said collar may be removably connected with the sleeve of the post.

3. In combination with a post having a sleeve provided with supports supported therein, of a sectional flower box having its lower extremity provided with a slitted collar rigidly secured to one of the sections of the box and removably connected with the second section, and said collar adapted to rest upon the supports of the sleeve.

4. A box or basket of the class set forth adapted to be positioned upon a post or pillar, said box or basket comprising a member having a slitted base, said member being also provided with a flange slitted in a line with the base, a catch member for connecting the slitted ends of the flange, a slitted collar securely connected with one of the sections of the base and removably connected with the opposite section of the base, the said collar being provided with openin'gs adapted for the reception of securing elements, the sections of the base having an opening which is surrounded by the said collar, a second slitted collar having its In testimony whereof We affix our signalower extremity formed with feet, means tures 1n presence of tWo Witnesses.
