NAIL-RECEPTACLE. y
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,925, dated November 23, 1886. .applicativa ined March 26,1886. sel-iai No.' 196,741. (Model.)
To a/ZZ whom t mar/:y concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MATHEws, a citizen of the United States, residing at Llano, in the county of Llano and State of Texas, have invented a new and'useful Improvement in N ail-Receptacles, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had to the acconipanyingV drawings.
My invention relates to a portable nail-receptacle; and it consists of the peculiar and novel construction and combination of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Y The object of my invention is to provide a nail holder or receptacle that can be conveniently and readily moved or transported from place to place arounda store or the like; to provide means for easily and readily discharging the contents of the receptacle without in- 2o juring the hands, and which shall be under the immediate control of the attendant; to proy vide means for varying the inclination of the pivoted receptacle in discharging the nails therefrom; and, nally, to provide a device of the class named which shall be verysimple, strong, and durable in construction, thor
4oughly effective for the purposes designed, and
comparatively cheap of *manufacture In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved portable nail receptacle or bin. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central sectional view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view. y
Referring to the drawings, in which like letters of reference denote corresponding parts all the gures, A designates the frame of my portable nail receptacle or bin, which comprises the vertical uprights B, tlie curved or angular bases C, a cross-beam, D, suitably secured to and between the standards or uprights B, and a tie rod or bar, C', which connects and strengthens the bases of the frame.
The various parts may be made of cast metal, or partly of wood and metal, and suitably secured or connected together. One of the legs of each of the bases C is provided with a slotted end, c, between which is arranged and supported a roller or caster, cjwhereby one end of the frame can be readily elevated, and the device transported or moved easily and readily from place to place on the rollers c', asywill be very readily understood.
E designates the receptacle or bin, which comprises a bottom, e, a rear wall, e', and the tapering side walls, e2, all of which are suitably secured together. The receptacle or bin is thus left open, so that the nails from a keg can be easily and readily emptied into the same; and it ismad'e contracted at one end to provide a discharge-mouth at f, andthe other end is' enlarged. The form or shape of the receptacle or bin is immaterial, it only being necessary to provide the contracted discharge end for convenience in emptying the whole or a portion of the contents into the scale-scoop or other receptacle; and the capacity of the receptacle can be varied to contain one orvmore kegs of nails. Thel receptacle is lined on its inner surface with sheet metal, as at f, to prevent the nails contained therein from injuring or defacing the same, and to facilitate the discharge thereof; and it is provided at or near its middle with castings F, that are bolted or otherwise-suitably secured to side walls at or near the middle and the upper edges thereof, and provided with trunnionsfz, that are journaled in boxes or bearings f3 in the upper ends of the standards B. AThe receptacle or bin is thus pivotally supported orsuspended between the standards, and it can be conveniently tilted by hand to discharge the content-s through the contracted open end thereof, and when it is filled with nails the preponderance of the weight thereof at the enlarged rear end of the pivoted receptacle will cause the rear end to be normally depressed in contact with the cross-beam `D, and thus elevate the discharge end to prevent accidental spilling of the contents, and relieve the pivots or trunnions of a portion of the weight and strain thereon.
. AGr designates a plate that is rigidly bolted or otherwise suitably secured to the bottom e of the suspended receptacle or bin, and this plate is provided with depending lugs gf, between which is arranged andrpivoted one end of a detent or bar, H, as at g, and this detainingbar is provided with a lip .or tongue, h, that is arranged at or near the middle of the bar, and is adapted to engage. one of a series of teeth, t', of a rack, I, that is suitably secured to or formed with the cross-beam D ofthe frame A, one end of the detaining-bar`H projecting beyond the suspended receptacle within con- IOO venient reach of the operators hand or foot. The operation of my invention is as follows: When it is desired t'o empty the whole or a portion of the contents of the receptacle, it is oshands; and, ifit is desired, a grab7 of any form, or a like implement, can be used to draw the nails from the receptacle. After the desired quantity of nails has been removed, the receptacle may or may not be returned to its normal position by merely elevating the de-V taining-bar by means of the hand or foot, to raise the tooth out of engagement with the rack-bar, and then lowering the receptacle.
My invention can be used for holding any substance around a store, and I therefore Would have it understood that I do not coniine myself to the use of the device in any partioular art.
Various slight changes in the form and proportion of parts and details of construction can be made without departing from the principle of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, 35 what I claim as new, and desire to secure by i Letters Patent,` is- 1. In a portable nail-receptacle, a carryingframe having a cr0ss-beam, D, provided With a rack, in combination with a swinging re- 4o ceptacle journaled in the frame and having enlarged rear end normally resting against the beam D, to elevate the discharge end thereof, and a detaining bar or rod pivoted to the under side of and carried by the swinging re- 45 ceptac'le, and having a' projecting lip, 7L, adapted to engage the rack and retain the receptacle in its adjusted position, substantially as described.
2. In a portable nailreceptacle, a frame 5o comprising the standards, the bases having rollers, and a cross-beam connecting the standards, in combination with a pivoted receptacle having a contracted open end, a detaining-bar pivoted to the receptacle, and provided with 5 5 a lip, and a rack carried by the cross-beam of the frame, all arranged and combined substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in 6o presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM MATHEWS.
