BARREL-STAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 471,010, dated March 15, 1892.

Be it known that I, THOMAS F. MARSHALL, a citizen of theUnited States,residing at Yankton, in the county of Yankton and Territory of Dakota, have invented certain new and -useful Improvements in Barrel-Stands, of
which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a front. elevation showing the device in place under the counter. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device as shown in Fig. 1 With a barrel in position upon it. Fig. 3 is a like view showing the device tilted. Fig. at is a perspective from the rear of the stand proper. Fig. 5 is a perspective from the front of the stand.
' This device belongs to that class known as barrel-stands, and which are used for moving and handling barrels, boxes, and like heavy packages, whereby such a package can be readily placed under a counter or otherwise in convenient position for use and so adapted'and arranged that it can be easily tilted when it is necessary to get access to the contents of the package or to return it to its normal position when need for the tilted position is over, all as will be now more fully set out and explained, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. In this A designates the partitions under the counter or any other suitable case or receptacle in which the stand may be used.
The stand consists of a frame made of a platform or base B and a vertical front 0, attached to the front edge of the base B and at right angles, preferably, therewith. On each side a brace D extends from the rear of said base diagonally to top of the front and is properly secured at base and front, and on the front 0, preferably near the upper part, is the handle E, now shown as a horizontal strip fastened at each side and bulging out a little and affording opportunity for being grasped by the hand; but instead of this construction there may be on each side or at the center handles of other shape and made of single pieces. These will evidently be only the equivalent of what is now shown, since their function will be identical with the handle now shown. This frame is supported on the front wheels F and rear caster-wheel G. The

The stand as thus constructed is adapted to sustain abarrel H or any like package, square or round, which can be so placed in position as to rest against the front or conveniently near thereto. When the package has been so placed in position, it is ready to be pushed under the counter I or into any other suitable openface case or receptacle, in which position it is represented in Fig. 1. When in this position, the caster-wheel is between the blocks '0', placed on the floor of the counter or receptacle-case, so' that when the stand or platform is in position it will be situated at each side of and beneath the base or platform. This construction is designed to be so adapted that the rear edge of the base will rest on said blocks when the stand is under the counter. There is also provided a removable stop or trig is under the front of the wheels, which is to be placed beneath the front edge of the wheels when the stand is pushed beneath the counter to hold it stationary.
When the device is in use, by means of the front handle the stand can be tilted forward and clear of the counter, so as to expose the top of the package or vessel which rests upon it for ready access to its contents. The stand can be readily adapted to its position under the counter and easily moved from it. WVhen it is desired to replace the vessel, barrel, or package which has been emptied by another full one or for any like purpose and when in position under the counter with its load upon it, the forward wheels act as a fulcrum or point on which the device and its package can be tilted forward with a very slight exercise of power, so as to fully expose the contents of the vessel, barrel,'or package upon it, and without any help it is held in this inclined position as the front of the stand touches the floor. When the desired quantity has been taken out of the vessel, barrel, or package, or for any other reason, this inclined position is not necessary. A very slight pressure serves to restore the stand and its load to the normal position under the counter. Thus there is a large economy or advantage in the use of my invention, since not only can the original article that holds the goods be placed upon the stand, moved about, and kept ready for use and its contents removed, thereby obviating any necessity for emptying the original package into a special receptacle placed on the stand or truck, but also by the ease and readiness with which access can be had to the contents of the original package or article placed on the stand.
I am aware that it is not, broadly, new to provide a platform or box for generally similar uses with the present device with rollers, so that the vessel or package on the platform or the box can be moved under or from the counter; also that by the construction of the case under the counter a box holding groceries can by drawing it forward be tilted. I therefore do not claim such a structure or device.
Having now described my invention, what I consider new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-
1. A barrel-stand consisting of the base B, the vertical front 0, attached thereto, the side braces D, connecting the base and front, the front wheels F, and caster-wheel G, all arranged and combined as used, for the purposes set forth, whereby the stand can be easily moved in or out of its casing or receptacle or when in position can be tilted forward to expose the contents of the vessel or package placed upon it.
2. A barrel-stand consisting of a base and a vertical front connected by braces and having on its front a handle near the upper end and supported by wheels on each side at the forward end and by a rear caster-wheel, substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
3. In combination with the case I, having blocks on the floor, and the trig K, of a barrel-stand, as described, consisting of the base B, front (3, having handle E, and side braces D and provided with front wheels F and rear caster-Wheel G, in the manner and for the purposes set forth, whereby without being rolled forward the package on said stand can be tilted forward to give access to its contents.
