ALBERT HENRY SICKMILLER, OF GALION, OHIO.
WIRE BASKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1907.
Application filed March 16, 1906. Serial No. 306,460.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, ALBERT HENRY SICKMILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galion, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire Baskets, of which the following is a specication.
My invention pertains to improvements in wire baskets.
lt has for its obj ect to provide for the ready convertibility of the basket, as relates to the particular use to which it may be appropriated; to vary its relative capacity; to enable it to be either suspended or stood in position; to render the basket capable of self-evolved embellishments; and to provide for the using of the basket in connection with a portable stand or support.
Said invention therefore consists of certain features substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed and specifically pointed out by the claims.
ln the accompanying drawing illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention-Figure l is a perspective view of the same, with the inner lower arrangement of supplemental loops in elevated position, the outer lower arrangement of like loops laterally extended to form frills, and the upper arrangement of like loops also elevated, the entire contrivance being in suspended position forming a hanging basket. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof superposed upon a portable stand or support. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section of the same, with the otherwise frill-like forming arrangement of loops to serve as legs for the basket.
In carrying out my invention, l provide a basket l made of wire throughout, of a type or nature possessing the requisite stoutness or strength and rigidity for the intend ed purpose, said basket having preferably the general outline or contour disclosed by the drawing, and comprising, in the main, fixed loop members or portions la and movable loop members or parts hereinafter suitably designated and described. The fixed members or portions l, which constitute the basket proper are in ping loops 2 is pivoted or applied to the fixed bottom ring-member lb, which loops are adapted to be readily moved andretained by friction in a position to serve as legs for the basket; to be extended or deflected outward and similarly retained to serve as a self-evolved embellishment, in the form of what may be termed frillsflor to be folded upward upon the basket. An inner lower arrangement of interlapping loops 3 is in like manner applied or pivoted to the same ring-member l", which loops are adapted to be moved from their initial position, as when lying fiat upon the bottom of the basket, into an upraised position, thus forming practically a supplemental bottom, which may serve to support a iiower pot or vase, placed within the basket, in an elevated position, as may be 'desired when it may not be required to wholly monopolize the basket for that purpose and yet properly display or expose to view the contained pot or vase, or for otherwise utilizing the basket, as will be readily appreciated. An upper inner arrangement of like loops 4 is applied or pivoted to ring-shaped loops lc formed in continuation of the members la at the upper edge of the basket, which loops are adapted to be moved, say from a depressed or the initial position, as when resting or folded back upon the inner surface of the basket, so as to stand or extend upward, and thus form an extension of the latter at that point, the utility of which is apparent and which loops lc have also wire-connections lcc with ring-members l1. In the use of the basket, it may be suspended in position, as by the employment of a contrivance or hanger 5, or it may be superposed in position upon a portable stand or support 6. The hanger 5 may be composed of a required number of hook-ended hangers 5fL effective for engagement with the ring-shaped loops lc of the basket, and of a hook-ended arm 5b having said hangers suitably assembled in connection therewith, and said arm itself adapted to be retained in offset-position with relation to any suitable support or fixture therefor.
The portable stand or support 6 may, itself be formed of a shallow concaved or basket-like top-member 6l to readily conform to, and support the basket, and of legs 6b preferably connected and braced to said top-member, the Whole being formed throughout of wire as in the case of the basket and produced in any suitable form of configuration or ornamental design.
I claim- 1. A basket of the character described, having an upper inner arrangement of movable loops effective for forming an upward extension of the basket.
2. A basket of the character described, having along its upper` edge at intervals apart ring-shaped loops and a hanger comprising an arm equipped with a number of hangers adapted for the support of the basket in suspended position.
3. -`A basket of the character described, having a lower.
innerarrangement of' movable loops interlapping each other toward the centre of the basket, an outer lower arrangement of movable interlapping loops shiftable from a downward extended position to an upward and outward extended position, anv upper inner arrangement of movable loops for forming an upward extension of the basket, ring-shaped loops along its upper edge at intervals, and means for the suspension of the basket in position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
, ALBERT HENRY SICK-MILLER. Witnesses:
