To all 'ufwm t may concern Be it known that l, BENJAMIN K. TRAY- Lon, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at El' Campo, in the county of Wharton and State of Texas, have invented new anduse-l ful Improvements in Store Shelves, of which the following is a specification. y The present invention relates to shelves ofthe type which'are adjustable for use at any position along the side of afiling case or the like to which the shelf may be attached. In drygoods stores, shoe stores, offices, libraries,icorridors, lhallways and the like,.where economy in the use of floor space is of importance, and yet where upon occasions it is desirable to have at hand a suitable supporting shelf or desk upon which articles may be placed for convenient display thereof, or for work thereupon, it has been a problem to produce a shelf or desk of a type which will be convenient when needed and which may be made to occupy a minimum amount of floor space when not in use, and which may be moved to various positions along the front of a file case.

An object of the invention is to produce a device of the above nature attached to the front of a. file case or the like which may be moved along the front of the file case without detachment therefrom, and which in the course of said movement may be maintained in a horizontal position and folded or collapsed into a small space when not in USS.

Other objects and advantages of the improvement 4will be disclosed in the subsequent preferred embodiment of the invention illustratedin the accompanying drawing, in which:

Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a 1ile case, showing the shelf of the present invention attached thereto;

Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the shelf, showing legs in collapsed position thereon.;

Fig. 4 is a detail view of the bar on which the shelf slides, showing the relation of the hinge member to the bar;

Fig. 5 is a detail view of one of the legs and the attaching brackets therefor; and

Fig. 6 is a slightly different form of the attaching hinge.

Referring to the drawings in detail by means of reference characters, 10 designates a filing case, as ina shoe store; lldesignates shoe boxes or the like stored in said filing case, and l2 is a narrow ledge or shelf at the basev of said file case beneath which may be provided drawers 13 orthe like.

Attached tothe base of the file case by suitable brackets or braces 111 is a bar 15 constituting a part of the present invention and which is preferably arranged parallel with the ledge 12. A shelf v16 is slidably mountedon said bar and the bar is preferably at such height on the base as will position the top of the shelf when in a horizontal position in the plane ofthe ledge 1.2,v 4the surfaces of the two forming surface of considerable width.

In order that the lshelf may be collapsed `so as to hang from said bar in a horizontal position as well as to slide therealonff suitable straps 17 are attached to the shelf which have links 18 hingedly attached thereto by one end, the opposite end of the links 18 bea supporting ing provided with eyes 19 adapted to fit slidably and rotatably on the bar'15. The eyes 19 are preferably provided with a slot or gap of sufficient width so that the eyes may readily pass the brackets 14 when the shelf is slid along the bar. The straps and links are preferably of flat sheet metal. It will be noted that the straps 17 are set in from the edge'of the shelf a distance sufli cient to position the links 18 against the underside of the shelf when in a horizontal position and by which construction the links 18 are prevented from movement except in a direction downward from the position shown in Fig. 1, and consequently, the shelf will be supported thereby in a horizontal position. A '1 Legs 21 are pivotally mounted on the shelf by means of brackets 22 and may be folded on the underside of the shelf and held in `folded position by means of a clip 23 of having a short side30 and two long sides 32 r and 33, the section being attached to the shelf by the short side 30. y

Additional supports for the shelf may be providedv in the nature of chains 2 7 secured at intervals along;l the li'le case and having a hook 28 at itsfr'eeend adapted to hook into a screw eye 29 upon the shelf. rEhe chain and legs may be used to supplement each other,` or either one may be used alone as found desirable oi convenient.

ln operation, when it is desired to use the shelf 16, it is raised to the horizontal position, the legs are dropped and. adjusted or the chain is attached, and When it is desired to move the shelf along' the front 'oi the case, the shellz is lit'ted untilthe links i8 extend downwardly in substantially a vertical direction, and the shell is then moved along the bar to its new position, the provision of the links 18 permitting the shelf to be maintained in a horizontal position when being` moved along the bar.

A support for use With liling cases and the like, comprising a bar having 'brackets for connecting said harto a case, a shell, slotted eyes carried by said sheljl" and slidably mounted on'said bar, the slots in said eyes loeing` 'of a Width sufficient to permit said eyes to pass said brackets, and means for holding' the shelf in a horizontal position. 2.
