" TATFS NiTFD VILLIAM A. ROOS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WINDOW-DESK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 582,097, dated May 4, 1897. Application filed January 20,1897. Serial No. 619,874. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern: p Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. Roos, of New York, (Kingsbridge,) in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Window-Desk, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to desks designed to be removably secured to a window-casing; and the object is to provide a desk that may be readily and quickly attached to a casing and regulated to any desired angle, and, further, to so construct the supporting portions of the desk that the same may be adjusted lengthwise to accommodate it to any width of Window.
I will describe a window-desk embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a perspective view of a desk embodying my invention and showing the same as applied to a Window-casing. Fig. 2 is a front elevation, and Fig. 3 is a sectional View on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
The desk comprises a leaf l, having a hinge connection With the upper member of a frame consisting of bars 2 and 3, connected together by means of posts 4. The free or front edge of the leaf is provided with a rib 5, designed to form a rest for a book, paper, or the like, and the leaf maybe held at any desired angle of adjustment by means of arms 6, having hinge connections with the lower member 3 of the frame and designed to engage their free ends with racks 7, secured to the under side of the leaf.
The arms 6 are connected together by means of cross-bars 8 and 9, and the said arms are held yieldingly against the racks by means of a suitable spring. As here shown, this spring consists of a rubber strap 10, connected at one end to an eye attached to the upper member 2 of the frame, and connected at the other end to a rod 1l, which engages around the cross-bar 9.
Extension-pieces l2 are adj ust-ably mounted on the frame-sections 2 and 3. These extension-pieces are formed of metal rods, substantially in the form of loops, and the horizontal members of the extension-pieces are movable through eyes 13, attached to the frame members 2 and 3, as plainly indicated in Fig. 2. The upper members of the extension-pieces are designed to be engaged with hooks 14, attached to the inner surface of the window-casing. iVith very narrow windows, however, the upper member 2 of theV frame may be engaged with the hooks.
It is obvious that this device may be used for a writingdesk, a reading-desk, an easel, or a cutting-table- The rib 5 will preferably be made removable, so that the desk may be more conveniently arranged for writing upon. As here shown, the rib is provided with pins for engaging in holes or sockets in the leaf l, and these holes extend through the leaf, s0 that the rib may be secured on the under side thereof, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, and held by a swinging arm 15. The upper edge of the leaf is also provided with holes to receive the pins when it is desired to rest the frame portion on a table to use the device as an easel.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A desk, comprising a frame, extensionpieces having horizontal members mounted to slide along the upper and lower portions of the frame, a leaf having swinging connection with the frame, a rack on the lower side of said leaf, an arm having swinging connection with the frame, and adapted to engage with the rack, and a rib having pins to removably engage in sockets formed near the front edge of the leaf and also to engage in sockets formed near the upper edge of the leaf, substantially as speciiied.
2. A desk, comprising a frame, extensionpieces consisting of metal rods bent in loop form, eyes on the frame through Which the horizontal members of the extension-pieces are movable, a leaf having hinge connection with the frame, racks on the lower side of said leaf, arms having swinging connection with the frame and adapted to engage with the IOO racks, and means fol1 holding the mns yielding arm fol1 holding,` the rib when engaged inglyagainstthe racks, substantiallyas speciagainst the under side of the leaf, substaned. tially as specified.
3. Adesk, eomprsngaframe, @leaf hinged VILLIAM A. ROOS. 5 thereto and having holes extended through Vitnesses:
it near its front edge, arb having pins to re- A. H. DIRKES, movably engage in said holes, and a swing- A JOHN OONNELLEY.
