DESK AND ITS SUPPORTS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 432,901, dated July 22, 1890.

Application led March 18, 1890. Serial No. 344,330. (No model.)

To all whom, t may concern:

Be it known that l, VILLIAM A. ROOS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Desks and their Supports, of which the fol'- lowing is a full, clear, and eXact description.

This invention is more particularly designed to be applied to windows, to constitute what I term a window-desk, but it also may be used in doorways and other places. It will here, however, be described as applied to a window.

The invention consists in certain novel oonstructions and combinations of parts adapted to provide for supporting the desk, the adjustment of its table or top to various angles, the shutting or closing of it when not needed, and its ready attachment and detachment and other purposes or uses, substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims. j

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure l represents a front View of a window with desk applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the window in a plane at right angles to Fig. l,with desk attached. Fig. 3 isa side view of the desk detached from the window and with its parts folded or closed, and Fig. 4t is a partly sectional longitudinal view of the one end portion of a bar-like frame used on the window-frame for attachment and support of the desk.

A is a frame represented as fitting across the window B and serving to provide for the attachment and support of the desk. Said frame is made up in part of two parallel'horizontal tubes b b, united by cross-ties c. Each of these tubes l) is provided at its opposite ends with a nut or box d, into which screws in line with the tube a screw-threaded pin e, that may be pointed at its outer end,and is constructed to provide for screwing it in or out-as, for instance, by making it with a iiattened portion f for a wrench to take hold of, or it may have a hole g for the insertion of a rod to turn it by. These adjustable pins bear on or enter at their outer ends footpieces 7L 71 which bear against the opposite sash-stops@l i' of the window-frame to hold the frame A in place, the screwing of the pins e outward serving to clamp the frame in position. The whole forms an adjustable clamp, and by turning the pins e in or out the frame A may be adapted to dierent widths of windows. By facing the feet h h with cloth or other soft material all marring of the window-frame is avoided. If desired, the feet h 7L might be dispensedwith and the pointed outer ends of pins may be made to bite into the windowframe, or the feet h h when adjusted may be secured in position by screws passing through them into the window-frame.

The upper tube b of the frame A serves to support in a hinged manner the desk top or table C at its back by means of hook-shaped straps 7a, one only of which is here shown applied to the under side of the desk-top and which readily hooks over the upper tube b, after which a draw-pin Z is inserted through either strap to close the open end of the hook and keep the desk or desk-top from accidentally coming od the upper tube b. The desk leaf or top C is supported from below by the lowertube b of the frame A by means of legs or braces D D through a hook-shaped strap mf, applied to each brace, and closed when hooked over the lower tube b by a bolt fn.

These braces, which are thus fitted to work up and down freely on the lower tube b of the frame A, are connected with the under side of the desk leaf or top C by swivel-loops r r, arranged at the forward ends of the braces, and made capable of slipping along ratchetracks E E, fastened to the under side of the desk leaf or top C. By thus hanging and supporting said -top it is free by only slightly manipulating it or the braces D D to adjust itself to any desired inclination or plane to suit the convenience of the writer or user, and after adjustment it automatically locks itself as set by the swivel-loops r r engaging themselves more or less farther along the racks E E, as required.

By drawing the bolts n the braces D D may be detached from the lower tube b of the frame A and be shut up in line with the racks E E, and be held when so shut up by one 'n and the draw-pins Z the whole desk may be removed from the frame A and be folded up, as shown in Fig. 3, out of the wayor to facilitate transportation.

The desk leaf or top C is here shown as provided with two racks E and two adjustable braces D; but where the desk is a narrow one, one rack and one brace centrally arranged will suflice.

The frame A when not required to carry the desk may be used asa window-guard, or it may be altogether removed from the window.

To provide the desk with an inkstand which will be kept from spilling and preserve a uniform level during all manipulations of the desk, such as altering its inclination or letting it down or detaching it from its support, I combine with the desk leaf or top C at its back a light wire frame G, bent to form a looped strap a', to'hug the desk-leaf above and below, also made to constitute a pen-rack b', and having an inkstand H hung by opposite upper side pivots c to the sides of said frame, whereby said inkstand will always be kept pendent and have its top uppermost under different positions of the desk leaf or top.

the draw or lock pins Z, and the adjustable nclined desk braces D, provided with open hook-shaped straps m and sliding bolts a for hinged connection with the fixed supportingframe, essentially as described.

2. The combination,with the fixed supporting adjustable clamping-frame A, of the desk leaf or top C, the hook-shaped straps k with their draw-pins Z, one or more racks E, attached to the under side of the leaf C, one or more inclinedbraces D, having a swivel-loop r at their forward ends, and the rear hookshaped straps m and sliding bolts n, substantially as specified.

The combination, with the adjustable and detachable desk top or leaf, of the frame G, having a clamp a to receive the edge of the top or leaf, eyes above said clamp, and a pen-rack beyond said eyes, all formed from a single piece of wire, and an ink-well having pivots mounted in said eyes, substantially as TILLIAM A.
