WINDOW-SEAT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 481,854, dated August 30, 1892. Application filed February 13, 1892. Serial No. 421,419. (No model.)

T0 at whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM ENGLER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Window-Seat, of which the following is a' specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved window-seat, showing itsapplication to a window-sill. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of the window-seat arranged as a music rack or blackboard, and Fig. 4 is atransverse section showing the window-seat adapted for use as a writing-desk.

The object of my invention is to construct a device to be used as a window-seat, a blackboard, music-rack, or a writing-desk, and to render the device in each of its applications adjustable.

My invention consists of a board furnished at opposite ends with cleats which extend beyond one of its edges, a piece hinged to one edge of the board, a hinged bar adapted to fold into the rabbet of the edge of the hinged board, a sliding adjustable bar for leveling up the board when used as a window-seat or as a writing-desk, and a brace for holding the board in an inclined position when it is used as a blackboard or a music-rack, all as willbe hereinafter more fully described.

The board A, forming the body of the seat, is provided at its ends with cleats a, which are prolonged beyond one of the edges of the board, as shown in Fig. 2. To this edge of the board and between the projecting ends of the cleats is hinged one edge of a board B, the hinges being attached to the under side I of the board A and to the inner side of the board B, so that When the board B is unfold ed the part of the said board that projects between the ends of the cleats abuts against the edge of the board A and prevents the board B from unfolding, so as to form an angle with the board A greater than a right angle. The hinged edge of the board B on the side adjoining the board A is rabbeted to receive the bar 0, which is hinged to the rabbeted portion of the board B, so that the said bar may be folded into the rabbet, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4, or unfolded, as shown in Fig. 3.

To the edge of the board A, opposite that to which the board B is hinged, are attached the rods 1), which are bent at right angles and extend parallel with the under surface of the board A. A bar D, provided with apertures for receiving the rods 1), is placed on the said rods and can be moved along the rods to adjust the seat to window sills of different widths. The bar D is provided at its ends with pointed screws 0, which are made to enter into the under surface of the board A when the bar D is adjusted to the width of the window-stool.

To the under surface of the board A and inner surface of the board B are attached strips (1 of soft rubber, which prevent the window-seat from injuring the window-sill, and in a similar manner the bar D is provided with soft-rubber strips 6 for preventing the said bar from injuring the surface upon which it rests, and also for giving it a better hold upon the surface. In the inner surface of the board B and in the inner surface of the bar D are formed cavities f f for receiving the wire brace g. The said wire brace g is provided with an eye it at or near the center thereof for convenience in handling.

To the bar D is secured a box '6 by means of pivoted hooks j, attached to the bar, and

eyes inserted in the ends of the box. The box t'is designed for containing the brace g and pencils or pens.

lVhen the device is used as a window-seat, the board B is unfolded, so that it forms a right angle with the board A, and the board A is placed on the window-sill with the board 13 in contact with the inner edge of the window-sill, and the bar D is moved inward, so that it rests upon the window-sill, as shown in Fig. 1. WVhen the device is used as a musicrack or a blackboard, the board B is unfolded. The bar O is also unfolded from the rabbet in the board and forms a ledge for holding sheets of music. The brace g is placed between the bar D and the board B, and the bar D is moved down, so as to receive the end of the brace g in the cavity f, the board A being adjusted at the desired inclination.

The bar forms a ledge for holding music or for receiving crayons used upon the blackboard.

when it is desired to use the device as a Writing-desk, the parts are adjusted as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, and when the device rests upon a table or other level surface the difiference in Width of the bar D and board 13 gives the board A a certain amount of inclination, [0 which can be varied by sliding the bar D along the rods 1).

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a Window-seat, the combination of the board A, the folding board B, hinged to the board A and arranged to open out at right angles toand shoulder against said board A, and the angled rods 6, attached to the edge of the board A and extending parallel with the board A, and the support D, adjustable on the rods Z) and adapted to rest upon the windowsill, substantially as specified.

2. In a Window-seat, the combination of the 2 5 base-board A, the folding board 13, hinged to the board A and arranged to open out at right angles to and shoulder against the said baseboard, the angled rods 1), attached to the edge of the base-board and extending underneath and parallel to the said base-board, the adjustable support D, placed on the rods 7) and adjustable along the length of the said rods, and spurs c, projecting from the adjustable support D and adapted to enter into and engage the under surface of the board A, substantially as specified.

3. In a Window-seat, the combination of the board A, the board B, hinged to the board A and arranged to open out at right angles to the said board A, the yielding strips d, attached to the boards A B, the right-angled rods 1), attached to the edge of the board A and extending parallel with its under surface, and the adjustable support D, placed on the rods'b and provided with a yielding covering on its lower edge, substantially as specified.
