ADJUSTABLE RACK.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM O. INAMI, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Rack, of which the following is a specification.

This invention'relates to improvements in racks or reading rests for supporting books and the like, or music, and resides in the provision of a rack which may be easily and quickly attached to the arm of a chair or like support and may be adjusted to suit the person sitting in the chair, so that the article supported on the rack will be inthe proper position.

Another object is to provide vertically adjustable rotatable means for detachably securing the rack to a chair or the like.

A further object is to provide easily operable, reliable means to vertically adjustably and slidably support the rack upon the vertically adjustable rotatable means, so as to provide a plurality of adjustments.

A still further object is to provide later ally adjustable means to clamp .a book or the like in open position on the rack, said means being extensible to accommodate books of various sizes.

A yet further object is to provide a device of the above-mentioned character which is of simple construction, is reliable and efficient in operation and may be cheaply manufactured.

The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations, and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.

A clamping plate 8 is carried on the inner end of the tighteningscrew 7 and is arranged to cooperate with a similar plate 9 fixed to the inner face of the opposed side of the frame 6. These plates 8 and 9 may be provided with felt gripping surfaces to prevent injurv tothe article to which the clamp is attached.

A horizontal rack supporting rod 10 is extended at right angles to the rod 2 and upon one end carries an elbow 11. Thelower end of the elbow is formed with a squared socket to receive the squared upper end of the rod 2. By this arrangement the rod 10 is prevented turning relative to the rod 2.

Mounted for sliding movement upon the rod 10 is means for vertically adjustably supporting a skeleton book or other article supporting frame 1 1. This means comprises a substantially upright plate 15 which has its lower end bent to form a substantially rectilinear sleeve 16. This sleeve 16 is slidably mounted upon the rod 10, the rod being rectilinear in cross section. The inner face of the plate 15 is provided with a series of rack teeth 17 and said plate engages with the rear face of one of the frame members 18 of the frame 14. A guide 19 is mounted upon said frame 1 1 and receives the plate 15. Guide fingers 20 are carried on the free end of the plate 15 and slidably engage with the frame member 18. In practice I have' found that the form of 'myinv ention illustrated in the drawings and referred'to 'in' the above description as the preferred embodiment is the most etlicient and practical, yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I' desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may-be resorted to when required without" sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention as set forth fin 1 the appended claim.

What I claim is:

Arack of the character described comprising an article supporting frame, a vertical rod,means to vertically adjustably and rotatably support said rod, means to secure said last named means to a chair,ra supporting rod connected with said rod and extending at; right: angles thereto, aaiplate siidable on said rod and extending upwardly therefrom and having rack teeth on one face thereof, means to slidably connect the frame with the plate, and a spring catch carried by said frame and engaging said rack teeth said spring catch being bowed outwardly intermediate its ends.
