Be it known that I, GEORGE P. BUTLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mouthpieces for Cigarettes or Cigars, of which the following is a specificatlon.

My invention relates to mouthpieces for cigarettes and cigars.

Independent conical flexible mouthpieces of paper or similar material have heretofore been used for cigarettes; but it has been found that when the cigarette is inserted far enough in the cone to be held firmly by the same and so as to make the connection between the two air-tight the cigarette has been wedged so far intothe con e as to pack the cigarette so tightly that it wilmfiliawflvlfithpieces hav also bemlgpoamo form a part of the cfgarettditself, withtlie cigarettewrappe r extending beyond the tobacco and a piece of paper rolled up and inserted in the tubular wrapper until it abuts against the tobacco and so as to make the otherwise flimsy tubular Wrapper firm enough to stand the use of a mouthpiece. The difficulty of this construction is that the wrapper is liable to become broken at the connection between the tobacco and the inserted wound paper by saliva or other moisture at this point or from any other cause, when the mouthpiece be- 7 comes entirely useless.

The principal objects of my invention are to provide a mouthpiece for a cigarette or cigar that can be cheaply and quickly made, that can be applied to the cigarette or cigar during the process of making the mouthpiece, and that will be so applied as to prevent the breaking of the cigarette or cigar at its connection with the mouthpiece or of the twobecoming wholly or partly detached from each other.

My invention consists in the product and details of the same, as herein described.

In the accompanying drawings I have shown one embodiment of my invention, in which-- Figure 1 illustrates in plan a blank of flexible material from which the mouthpiece may be made. Fig. 2 illustrates an elevation of a cigarette with the blank partly applied or wound thereon. Fig. 3 is an elevation of a cigarette with the mouthpiece applied thereon, the dotted lines indicating that part of the cigarette inclosed by the mouthpiece. Fig. 4c is a vertical section, enlarged, of Fig. 3 with the outer end of the cigarette broken away. Fig. 5 is a transverse section, enlarged, through the mouthpiece on the line 5 5 of Fig. A looking in the direction of the arrows.

Similar numbers represent like parts in all the figures.

l is a blank or piece of flexible material as,for example,paperpreferably of the form shown in Fig. 1. This blank 1 is narrower throughout a portion 2 of its length than the other portion, 3, of the blank, so that there will be a connecting edge 4* between the edgeet of said narrow portion and the adjacent edge 3 of the wider portion 3. The edge 4 preferably slants obliquely backward from the edge 4:, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 6, fora purpose hereinafter to be described. If the blank 1 be Wound in the form of a tube,with the narrower portion 2 inside, the edge 4 of said portion 2 will form a stop-shoulder for the end of a cigarette or cigar 5 to abut against, as shown in Figs. 2, 4 and 6. The cigarette or cigar 5 may be inserted in the wider portion of the wound blank 1, with the end of the cigarette or cigar beyond or abutting against shoulder 4, after the blank has been wound and made independently into the mouthpiece, or the blank may be wound around said cigarette or cigar 5, as indicated in Fig. 2, the mouthpiece thus being formed while winding it upon the cigarette or cigar. blank should be secured to the part upon which it is wound by gum, paste, or other means 6. The gum or other adhesive material 6 can be applied to the inner surface of the blank 1 and the blank wound whilfiiullildhesivamaterial is damp, so that after the blank is wound it will retain its tubular position. The adhesive material may cover the entire surface of the blank or only part of said surface, and

The outer or wider portion 3 of the preferably the part adjacent to the edge 3. This will permit the blank either when wound independently or wound upon a cigarette or cigar, with the adhesive inside, to be held in its wound condition, and a more compact or solid mouthpiece will be formed by uniting firmly all the folds of the wound piece together. Means are also provided for securing the mouthpiece to an inclosed end of a cigarette or cigar. The adhesive may be allowed to dry upon the blank before it has been wound, thus providing an article of manufacture from which a complete and compact mouthpiece can be made independently or made while applying it to the end of a cigarette or cigar, it being only necessary to soften or partially melt the adhesive before form in g the blank in to a mouthpiece. Although the edge t might be at right angles with the edges 4 or 3 or made to meet said edges at acute angles, said connecting edge would be likely to buckle up when the strip 1 is wound, and it is for this reason and to avoid this difliculty that the edge 1 is made oblique, for when the strip 1 is wound from the part 2 to the part 3 the connecting edge a would be wound within said strip gradually in the direction of said edge from the edge 4: to the edge 3, and this would prevent said connecting edge from buckling up within the wound strip. The more oblique the angles between the shoulder 4: and the edges 4: anc 3 the nearer a straight slanting edge is approached, so that such edge will produce somewhat the same result as the three edges 4:, 4", and 3.

My invention in its broader aspects is not limited to the precise product described and shown, as many changes other than those suggested may be made therein without departing from the main principles of my invention.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A blank for forming a mouthpiece to be wound upon the end of a cigarette or cigar, consisting of a strip or piece of flexible material narrower at one part than at the other, said narrower portion providing means by which said strip may be started to be wound before winding it on the cigarette or cigar, and whereby said latter winding may be a continuation of the former winding.

2. A blank for forming a mouthpiece to be wound upon the end of a cigarette or cigar, consisting of a strip or piece of flexible material narrower at one part than at the other, said narrower portion providing means by which said strip may be started to be wound before winding it on the cigarette or cigar, and whereby said latter winding may be a continuation of the former winding, and one surface of said blank provided with an adhesive material.

3. A blank for forming a mouthpiece to be wound upon the end of. a cigarette or cigar, consisting of a strip or piece of flexible material narrower at one part than at the other, said narrower portion providing means by which said strip may be started to be wound before winding it on the cigarette or cigar, and whereby said latter winding may be a contin uation of the former winding, and the wider portion of said blank provided with an adhesive material.

4. A blank for forming mouthpieces for cigarettes or cigars having a projecting portion adapted to enter a slot in a spindle to permit the winding of the blank and having a wider succeeding portion adapted to overlap a cigarette or cigar when placed against and in alinement with the spindle and adapted to be wound around the ends both of the spindle and the alined cigarette or cigar.

5. A mouthpiece for a cigarette or cigar. composed of a wound strip of flexible material with the interior of the wound portion forming a shoulder beyond the inclosed end of a cigarette or cigar, and said strip secured in its wound condition.

6. A mouthpiece for a cigarette or cigar, composed of a wound strip of flexible material having an edge of the inner portion between the two ends of the mouthpiece, and the inner surface of the mouthpiece having upon it an adhesive material for securing the mouthpiece to the inserted end of a cigarette or cigar.

7. A mouthpiece for a cigarette or cigar, composed of a wound strip of flexible material with the interior of the wound portion forming a shoulder beyond the inclosed end of a cigarette or cigar, and said strip secured in its wound condition, and the inner surface of the mouthpiece having upon it an adhesive material for securing the mouthpiece to the inserted end of a cigarette or cigar.

8. A mouthpiece for a cigarette or cigar, composed of a wound strip of flexible material with the interior of the wound portion forming a shoulder beyond the inclosed end of a cigarette or cigar, and said strip wound upon itself, secured in its wound condition, and the inner surface of the mouthpiece beyond its narrow portion having upon it an adhesive material for securing the mouthpiece to the inserted end of a cigarette or cigar.

9. In combination with a cigarette or cigar, a mouthpiece consisting of a wound strip of flexible material surrounding an end of said cigarette or cigar, and the inner part of said mouthpiece forming a shoulder beyond said end of the cigarette or cigar.

10. In combination with a cigarette or cigar, a mouthpiece consisting of a wound strip of flexible material surrounding said cigarette or cigar, and the inner part of said mouthpiece forming a shoulder beyond the end of the cigarette or cigar.

11. The combination with a cigarette or cigar, of a mouthpiece composed of a Wound strip of flexible material having an edge of the inner portion between the two ends of the mouthpiece, and said strip wound around the cigarette or cigar with said edge of the inner portion beyond the inclosed end of the cigarette or cigar.

12. In combination with a cigarette or cigar, a mouthpiece consisting of a wound strip of flexible material surrounding said cigarette or cigar, and the inner part of said mouthpiece formed with ashoulder beyond the end of the cigarette or cigar, and said strip secured in its wound condition.

13. In combination with a cigarette or cigar, a mouthpiece consisting of a wound strip of flexible material surrounding said cigarette or cigar, and the inner part of said mouthpiece formed with a shoulder beyond the end of the cigarette or cigar and the mouthpiece secured to the cigarette or cigar.

14:. The combination with a cigarette or cigar,of a mouthpiece composed of a Wound stri p of flexible material having an edge of the inner portion between the two ends of the mouthpiece, and said strip wound around the cigarette or cigar with said edge of the inner portion beyond the inclosed end of the cigarette or cigar, and said strip secured in its wound condition.

15. The combination with a cigarette or cigar,of a mouthpiece composed of a wound strip of flexible material having an edge of the inner portion between the two ends of the mouthpiece, and said strip wound around the cigarette or cigar with said edge of the inner portion beyond the inclosed end of the cigarette or cigar, and the mouthpiece secured to the cigarette or cigar.

16. In combination with a cigarette or cigar, a mouthpiece secured thereto having a narrow part and a wider part, the wider part wound to overlap the end of the cigarette or cigar and the narrow part wound Within the wider part and beyond the end of the cigarette or cigar.
