Description

W. H. PLANE. TOBACCO PIPE.
'PATENTED FEB. 18, 1908 APPLICATION FILED 001210, 1907.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. PLANE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TOBACCO-PIPE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. PLAN-E, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in Tob acco-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
invention relates to tobacco'pipes, and the object of my invention is to provide a pipe of such improved construction that the nicotin will be separated from the smoke in its passage from the bowl of the pipe to the smokers mouth and will be deposited in suitable recesses provided to receive it.
A further object is to provide a pipe in which the smoke shall be considerably cooled before it reaches the mouth.
Further objects are, to provide a pipe as mentioned which shall be formed 1 of few parts which may be readily taken apart and easily cleaned and as readily reassembled, and to provide a pipe having the characteristics mentioned which shall present a neat appearance not unlike that of theordinary pipe. Other objects will appear hereinafter. With these objects in view my invention consists generally in a pipe comprising a bowl, a stem formed thereon having a cylindrical bore, a core arranged within said bore and having a tortuous passage, portions of which are arranged to constitute pockets to receive and hold the nicotin which is separated from the smoke as it passes through said passage.
My invention further. consists in the various novel details of constructionand arrangements of parts all as will be fully described hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
My invention will-be more readily under stood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which,
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a pipe embodying my invention in its preferred form, Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof Fig. 3 is a plan view of the core removed from the stem and Fig. 4 is a cross section on the line ac-w of Fig. 3. I
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the bowl of the pipe which may be of any preferred form and is provided with the stem 2 havin a cylindrical bore 3. The bore 3 is much larger than the usual bore in order to receive a core 4, which, being provided with Patented Feb. 18, 1908.
a tortuous passage and a plurality of nicotin pockets constitutes .a baflie for the smoke. The core. 4 is substantially cylindrical, fitting snugly within the bore 3 and is provided with a plurality of annular grooves 5 spaced at. equal distances apart and forming with the bottom walls of the stem 2 nicotin pockets 6. The portions 7 of the core intermediate of the grooves 5, fit the bore snugly, and a smoke channel of passage is formed by connectingthe grooves 5 with longitudinally disposed grooves formed In the portions 7. Any number of these grooves may be provided in the portions 7 but I find two. a sufiicient number and prefer to arrange them in the upper side of the core so as not to interfere with the nicotin collected in 'the bottom of the pockets 6. The grooves may be disposed in any suitable manner, but I preferthat illustrated in the drawings. The grooves 8 extending from the bowl of the pipe to the first nicotin chamber 6 are preferably straight and are arranged diametrically opposite to each other in 'the side of the first portion 7. The other portions 7 are each provided with a pair of grooves 8 forming. an exit from the sides of eachpocket and converging into one before reaching the top of the next succeedin pocket. By this arrangement the triangu ar portion between each pair of grooves forms a baffle 7 for the smoke emitting from the preceding grooves. This causes the nicotin to be deposited in the grooves 5 and to be finally collected in the bottom of the pockets.
.The grooves forming a tortuous passage are arranged upon the surface of the core keeping the smoke in contact with the walls of thestem. This causes the smoke to be cooled to a considerable degree before reaching the mouth. The end of the core is threaded into the end of the stem 2 as at 9 and is provided with an enlarged portion 10 which forms an extension of the stem. The portion 10 is provided with a socket 11 to receive the end of the mouth piece 12. 13 indicates a small bore leading from the last groove 5 to the socket 11 and communicating with the bore 14 of the mouth piece.
The device is readily dismembered for cleaning. To this end the portion 10 carrying core 4 is unscrewed and withdrawn from the stem 2, after which the bore may be cleansed as well as the grooves in the core. Further the device presents a neat appearance not unlike that of the ordinary pipe.
The principal difference bein a slight enlargement in the diameter of t e stein.
Having described my inventionwhat I claim as new and desire -to secure by Letters Patent is;
1. Ina device of the class described, a bowl, and'a' stem having a cylindrical bore,
in combination with a cylindrical core fitting snugl within said bore, said core having a plura it 1 of annulargrooves spaced at equal distances apart thereon and a pair of grooves forming an exit from each said annular grooves and converging into one before dis charging into the next succeeding groove and a mouth piece at theend of said core, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, a bowl and a stem having a cylindrical bore, in
avep'ee combination with a cylindrical core, arranged to fit within said bore, said core having a torg signed my 30 presence of Witnesses:
