Be it known that I, ANDREW E. MATsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eureka, in the county of Humboldt and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco- Pipes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

rlhis invention relates to improvements in pipes for smoking tobacco.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple and practical device of this character in which the smoke will be caused to travel through a circuitous passage in the stem and be thereby cooled and caused to deposit any nicotin which it may carry, a further object of the invention being to provide a device of this character in which the parts may be readily separated to permit them to be effectively cleaned.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the pipe; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section; Figs. 3 and 4 are views of the opposite ends of the cylinder containing the circuitous smoke passage; Fig. 5 is a detail perspective of the sleeve upon the shank of the bowl; Fig. 6 is a detail view of one of the apertured disks or partitions; and Fig. 7 is a detail cross section taken on the plane indicated by the line 7- 7 in Fig. 2.

The invention comprises a bowl 1 of any suitable form and construction to receive tobacco, a mouth piece 2 which may be straight, as shown, or suitably curved, and a stem 3 which unites the bowl and mouth piece. The stem 3 is in the form of a substantially cylindrical tube, one end of which' is adapted to receive a reduced portion or shank 4 formed upon the bowl 1 and containing a smoke passage 5 which communicates with the bottom of the tobacco cavity in the bowl. Said shank 4 is cylindrical in form and is preferably made hollow or with a cavity 6 in which cotton or any filtering material may be placed if desired. Surrounding the shank 4 is a metal sleeve 7 of cylindrical form over which the tubular stem 3 fits. Within the tubular stem 3 is a cylinder 13 and two centrally apertured disks or partitions 14, 15, the disk 14 being interposed be tween the other end 17 of the latter and the head 10 of the mouth piece, as shown in Fig. 2. The cylinder 13 has a circuitous smoke passage consisting of a plurality of longitudinally extending channels 18, which are in communication with each other through recesses or notches 19 at the opposite ends of the cylinder. The beginning of the passage is at a central cavity 20 in the end 16 of the cylinder opposite the central opening in the disk 14 while the end of said passage is at the center of the opposite end 17 of the cylinder, as will be seen upon reference to Fig. 2. By constructing the cylinder in this manner and having the disks 14, 15 centrally perforated they will close all the passages and recesses in the cylinder eX- cepting the entrance and exit of the same no matter to what relative positions the bowl, stem and month piece may be turned. The cylinder 13 and the disks or partitions 14, 15 are removable from the stem so that these parts also may be quickly and thoroughly cleaned.
