This invention relates to improvements in smolzefis appliances.

The 3rimary object of this invention is the provision of a tobacco smoking device, of a sectional nature, including a plurality of sections having means to support tobacco and being provided with a novel groove arrangement by means of which the cleaning of the appliance or device is rendered easy.

A further object of this invention is the provision of an improved smokers appliance consisting of longitudinally split complementary sections provided with a preferably tortuous smoke travelling way or path at the facing sides thereof wherein is preferably provided an enlarged chamber for receiving a nicotine strainer or moisture absorber.

A further object of this invention is the provision of an improved smoke-rs appliance consisting of complementary longitudinal split sections having an associated washer therebetween cooperating with a smoke travelling groove at the facing sides of the sections in'permitting a proper draft and sealing the smoke travelling path or way in theproper manner.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description.

In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration are shown preferred and modified forms of the invention, the letter A may generally designate the smokers appliance, which in the particular formillustrated is a pipe, including a bowl or tobacco receiv ing portion 13 consisting of complementary sections O and D. The improved pipe furthermore includes a stem construction consisting of complementary stem sections F and G.

The pipe bowl and stem sections are split at the vertical longitudinal central plane through the pipe, and the sections C and D are recessed at 20 and 21 respectively,- in ward ly of the :t'acing sides thereof, to provide the bowl socket for receiving the tobacco for smoking purposes. Inwardly of the flat side 22 of thepipe section C, is provided a narrow recess or groove 25, opening throughout its length at the side 21-, and opening at one end in the bowl recess 20 and at its opposite end terminating in a dead end. The COD'lPlQ-IDGII- tary sect-ions C and D are provided with stem inserting shank halves 27 and 28 respective ly, which respectively have half cylindrical recesses 29 and 30 therein, to form the sockets for the insertion of the stem E, as will be subsequently described. .In the section D, opening in the bottom end of the recess 30 is a recess 35, grooved inwardly of the face 36 of the section D, which is enlarged bet-ween its ends, and preferably concavely convexly arcuated, and terminates at a dead end 37 short of the recess 21'.

The sections C and D of the bowl or tobacco receiving portion of the appliance A have the grooves and recesses am so provided therein that the lower end of the recess 25 will overlap the end 37 of the recess 35, to provide a communication between the recesses or grooves 25 and 35 when the pipe bowl sections C and D are in their co1nple mentary abutting relation at the sides 22 and 36. This co-mnniinication of the grooves or recesses 25 and 35 is well illustrated in Figure 7 of the drawing, and provides a path through which smoke may travel from the bowl socket where the tobacco is received to the stem of the pipe or appliance as can readily be understood.

Itis contemplated that the sections C and D may be-, directly clamped at the facing sides 22 and 36, but it is also provided, and it is preferred that a special gasket K be provided between the conipleinentary sections C and D, having the general contour of the sections C and D, and recesses at so as to not project at any location into the socket recesses 20 and 21 of the bowl sections, as can readily be understood from Figure 7 of the drawing. It is furthermore preferred that the gasket K will have transversely provided therethrough an opening 41, which aligns with the overlapping ends of the grooves 25 and 35 of the sections C and D. as is shown in Figure 7 of the drawing, so that the gasket K will not provide an obstruction to the free passage of smoke from the pipe bowl into the stem. Furthermore the gasket K is provided with a recess 43, so as not to overlap the stem inserting socket recesses 29 and 30 of the bowl sections C and D, as is readily observable from the drawing. It is further more preferred to provide a reduced recess 44 notched from the bottom of the recess 4-3, through which the smoke may pass from the stem end of the groove 35, into the stem, in the relation illustrated in Figure l of the drawing.

As a means of detachably holding the bowl or tobacco receiving sections C and D of the pipe bowl COl'lSil'UCtlOll together, it is pre ferred that the sections C and D and the gas ket K, be res iectively provided with transverse openings 45, 4:6 and -l'?, which do not intersectany of the grooves or recesses of the said pipe parts, and through which a detachable bolt is adapted to pass, as illustrated in the drawings; the head and nut ends thereof being countersunk in the pipe sections C and D, as illustrated in Figure 7, for holding the sec-- tions C and D in their above described assembled relation with the gasket K clamped there between.

The gasket K may be made of any yieldable or plastic material, and the function thereof is to cooperate in providing an efiicient pipe with a good draft, which may be readily cleaned and the parts of which may be economically manufactured and readily assembled or disassembled,

Referring to the stem construction E of the improved smokers appliance A, the formation of the complementary sections F and G thereof is well illustrated in Figures 2 and 3 respectively of the drawing. The said sections F and G are respectively provided with tapered bodies 55, and 56, having flat sides 57 and 58 respectively, adapted to face when in a complementary stem providing relation. The said bodies and 56 are provided. with reduced half cylindrical shanks and 61 respectively, which provides a shank adapted to be inserted in the socket of the bowl construction B, as shown in Figure 4; of the drawing. In the flat side 57 of the section F is provided a. narrow groove or recess 65, opening on said flat side throughout the length of the stem, said groove 6 5 extending in a straight portion through the shank 60, and intermediate its ends being tortuously bent at 67, shown in Figure 2 of the drawing, and adjacent the mouth inserting end 68, the same being enlargcd at 69 for receiving an absorbent insert 70, which may be used to absorb moisture and nicotine therewith, from the smoke prior to discharge into the smoker-s mouth. The flat surface 58 of the stem section G is ungrooved, preferably, and the shank portions 60 and 61 of the stem sections F and G respectively are received in the recess portions 29 and 30 of the stem inserting end of the bowl sections C and D, as illustrated in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawing.

It is preferred that a narrow insert L be provided for placement between the complementary sections F and G, said insert L being of the general surface contour at the juncture of the sections F and G, and including a re duced shank portion on the body 77 thereof, said body 77 being preferably imperforate and the free end of the shank 7 5 having a notched portion 78 which is adapted to align with the notched portion let of the bowl insertor gasket K, in order to permit communication of the adjacent ends of the bowl and stem grooves and 65 respectively, as illustrated in Figure l of the drawing.

The sections F and G of the stem construction E with the insert L therebetween are held in assembled relation by means of a tapered tubular band 80, the passageway of which is tapered and through which the sections slip so that the band 80 may be clamped on the external surface thereof for holding them in assembled relation, as shown in Figures 1 andfl of the drawing, an d also the sectional view of Figure 8. The tapered tubular band 80 is rolled at 82 on the front and rear circumferential edges thereof, if desired. One or more of these bands may be provided, and the same receives the sections and insert of the stem construction in snug relation to hold the parts firmly clamped for proper insertion with the bowl construction B. lVhen the bowl construction and stem construction are assembled the draft passageway from the tobacco receiving portion of the bowl extends from the groove 25 into the groove 35 through the overlapped ends, and thence from the groove 35 through the notches 44 and 78 of the gaskets K and L respectively, and into the groove 65 of the stem, and through the filtering material into the mouth of the user. 1

In Figures 9 to 13 inclusive is shown a cigarette or cigar holder M, embodying certain novel features generic with the improved pipe A above described. The cigar or cigarette appliance M includes complementary half sections N and P, provided with facing fiat surfaces 90 and 91 respectively. The outer sides of the sections N and P taper from the mouth inserting ends 93 thereof to their opposite ends, and inwardly of the flat sides 90 and 9 1 the sections N and P are respectively provided with cigarette or cigar end inserting recesses or grooves 95 and 96 respectively, which are grooved inwardly of the flat surfaces 90 and 91, and extend to the end surfaces at the margin ends of the sections N and P, as illustrated in Figures 9, 10 and 12 of the drawing. At the opposite or mouth inserting end 93 the sections N and P are grooved at 97 and 98 respectively, inwardly of the flat sides 90 and 91, and flaring to an enlargement at the reduced end edges of said sections N and P, as shown in Figures 9, 10 and 12. From the recesses 95 and 96 at the larger ends of the sections N and P, the flat sides 90 and 91 of said sections respectively are not grooved to the mouth inserting ends 93, where the recesses 97 and 98 are provided as above described. As a means of communicating the grooves or recesses of the cigarette inserting end of the cigarette holder with the grooves or way at the mouth inserting end of the appliance M, a novel insert or gasket R is provided, whichis provided with a preferably r-sti'aight narrow longitudinally extending slot 100 thcrcthrough, whichis longer than the distance between the facing grooves 97 and 9S, and the grooves 95 and 9 6, so that the ends of said slot 100 will extend into the cigarette inserting grooves 95 and 96 and at the opposite end into the cooperating recesses 97 and 98 of the mouth inserting end of the cigarette or cigar holder, as shown in Figure 9 of the drawing,-thus establishing a draft-way between the cigarette or cigar inserting end of the holder and the mouth inserting end thereof. The gasket R is preferably recessed at 102, at the larger end thereof, so as not to obstruct the cigarette or cigar 103 as the same is inserted into the holder M, as shown in Figure 9 of the drawing. In similar manner the opposite end of the gasket B may be notched at 105, so that the smokers tongue will not come into contact therewith.

The gaskets K, L, and R of the preferred and modified forms of the invention cooperate in providing a draft-way in the smckers appliance, and also provide an effective seal at the j oint' of junctures of the sections which are clamped with the gasket parts therebetween. It is possible that the appliance may be used without such gaskets.

From the foregoing description of this invention it is apparent that novel smokers appliances such asf pipes, cigar and cigarette holders and the like have been provided, the parts of which are assembled in such coinpact relation that they may be easily dctached to facilitate cleaning. The construction is particularly well adapted for receiving filters and the like in an easily disassembled relation, and the parts of the appliances are such that the samemay be readily die pressed or otherwise formed without excessive expenditure. The pathway is such that the same is relatively long, especially as shown in the appliance A, so that a long draft smoke path is provided in a relatively short smoking appliance.

The parts N, P and R of the improved cigarette or cigar holder M are held together by a tubular clamping band 110, similar to the band above described, the same preferably being of metal and being tapered throughout the length thereof to provide a tapered passageway for snugly receiving the tapered sections and the insert or gasket of the appliance M. If desired the band 110 may be beaded at 111 at the free edges thereof.

Various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be made to r the forms of invention herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of the same or the scope of the claims.

I claim:

1. In a smokers device a tobacco holding member comprising longitudinally separable complementary sections, and a gasket therebetween 7 formed to provide a passageway through the length of the device and adapted to be exposed throughout the length of the sections when the sections and gasket are separated.

2. In a smokers device a tobacco holding member comprising a'pair of longitudinally separable complementary sections having plane facing surfaces, a gasket having an elongated. passageway therealon g, and means to clamp the gasket between said sections to provide a draft passageway along the holding member from one end to the other.

3. In a smokers device the combination of a pair of longitudinally separable complementary sections, a gasket, means for clamping the gasket between the sections, said gasket having a longitudinal slot therealong, and the sections being formed to expose the ends of the slot at the ends of said sections to provide a draft passageway along the holding member.
